DAGUS MINES – The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 squad needed extra innings to pull off a come-from-behind victory on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader against the team from Fox Township Post 511. The contest was played at the Fox Township Legion field, and the Post 103 team rallied for a 10-3 win in nine innings.
Fox Township had taken an early 3-0 lead in the second inning of the game, but St. Marys put up two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to tie the score at 3-all, and that's how it stayed until the top of the ninth inning when St. Marys' batters took advantage of a Fox Township pitching change to rack up seven runs and secure the victory.
The St. Marys Post 103 team had 11 hits in the contest, led by Ivan Wortman with a trio of singles. Vincent Jacob and Jack Herzing each recorded a pair of singles, and Jake Cortina, Ben Cortina, Nick Burdick, and Dan Singer all singled.
Fox Township had four hits, all on singles, by Justin Quiggle, Brandon Vollmer, Alexx Tyger, and Luke Schreiber.
Kevin Hoy started on the mound for St. Marys, working six innings and giving up all four of Fox Township's hits while walking three and striking out five. Jack Herzing took over for the next two innings, walking one and striking out five. Mitch Meyer worked the final inning, striking out one.
Alexx Tyger started on the mound for Fox, working seven innings and giving up five hits, walking four, and striking out five. Branden Tyger took over for one and one-third innings, giving up four hits, walking three, and striking out one. Luke Schreiber worked the final two-thirds of an inning, giving up two hits and walking two.
After a scoreless first inning for both squads, the St. Marys team left a pair of runners stranded in the top of the second. Fox put up all three of their runs in the home half of the inning, with Branden Tyger starting things off by reaching base on an error. Tyger advanced to second as Justin Beimel walked, and then a single by Brandon Vollmer loaded the bases. Alexx Tyger reached base on an error, scoring Branden Tyger and leaving the bases loaded. With one out, Luke Schreiber singled, scoring both Beimel and Vollmer to give Fox Township a 3-0 lead.
Neither team scored in the third, though St. Marys did leave a runner on base.
The Post 103 squad finally made it on the board in the top of the fourth as they scored their first two runs to cut into Fox's lead. Ivan Wortman started things off with a single and advanced to second on a fielder's choice by Ben Cortina. Jack Herzing was hit by a pitch, and later picked up second on a passed ball. A single to right by Nick Burdick scored both Wortman and Herzing, leaving Fox Township with a slim 3-2 advantage. The Post 511 team was unable to answer in the home half of the inning as they left a runner on base.
St. Marys tied things up in the top of the fifth as Eric Wehler reached base on an error, stole second, and later made it home to knot the score at 3-all as Wortman flied out to center for the second out of the inning. Fox again left a runner on base in the bottom of the inning.
Neither team scored during the sixth, seventh, or eighth innings, though both squads did leave a few runners on base. St. Marys was the first team to change pitchers, putting Jack Herzing in for Hoy in the bottom of the seventh after Hoy walked Michael Fox. Herzing fanned the next two batters and Quiggle grounded out to second to end the inning and keep the game tied.
Fox Township made their first pitching change in the top of the eighth, replacing Alexx Tyger with Branden Tyger after Wortman singled and Ben Cortina walked to give St. Marys a pair of base runners. The next three batters went down in order, keeping St. Marys from breaking the tie. Herzing walked one and struck out three in the bottom of the inning.
St. Marys finally got their offense going in the top of the ninth by taking advantage of six hits and four walks from Fox pitchers Branden Tyger and Luke Schreiber to score seven runs. Fox's batters went down in order in the home half of the inning, giving the Post 103 team the 10-3 victory.
