St. Marys Senior stars advance to Section 1 finals

The St. Marys Little League Senior all-star team advanced to the finals of the Section 1 tournament with a 6-4 victory over Harborcreek Friday night.
St. Marys will now meet Crawford County this afternoon at 3 p.m. at Mt. Jewett for the right to advance to the state tournament scheduled for Emporium. If a second game is necessary, it will be played immediately following the 3 p.m. game.
In Friday’s game, St. Marys had nine hits. Ben Cortina had a double and a single, while Jack Herzing and Mitch Meyer both had two singles. Shea Meyer tripled and Dalton Kline doubled. Todd Barnes had a single.
Harborcreek was the home team for last night’s game.
In the top of the first inning, St. Marys jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Kline led off with a double. With one out, Herzing singled, scoring Kline. Mitch Meyer and Cortina each singled scoring Herzing. After Vince Jacob walked, a single by Shea Meyer scored Cortina and Mitch Meyer to give St. Marys the lead. Harborcreek responded with a run of their own in the home half of the inning on two hits and a walk to make the score 4-1.
St. Marys went down in order in the second inning. In the home half, Harborcreek added another run to cut the St. Marys lead to 4-2.
Mitch Meyer led off the top of the third with a single. Cortina moved Meyer to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Shea Meyer tripled, scoring Mitch to give St. Marys the 5-2 lead. Harborcreek scored a run on an error and a hit to cut the St. Marys lead to 5-3.
St. Marys left two men on base in the fourth inning. In the home half, Harborcreek scored a run to cut the St. Marys lead to 5-4.
Cortina led off the top of the fifth with a double. With two outs, Quinn Cunningham reached base on an error, allowing pinch runner Mitchell O’Neill to score and give St. Marys the 6-4 lead. In the home half of the fifth, Harborcreek left a man on base.
Both teams went down in order in the sixth inning. St. Marys went down in order in the top of the seventh. In the home half of the inning, Harborcreek left a man on base as St. Marys registered the 6-4 victory.
