St. Marys Servicemen's Detail holds annual banquet

Members of the St. Marys Servicemen's Detail held their annual banquet on Saturday evening at the Bavarian Hills Restaurant, with Detail President Joe Rigard acting as master of ceremonies for the event.
Rigard explained that the Detail was first organized in 1952 and noted that two charter members were in attendance at this year's banquet, Paul Jesberger and Herb Straub.
Rigard also recognized Straub as the only charter member who has been active throughout the history of the Detail. According to Rigard, out of a possible 1,229 funerals held since the Detail was formed, Straub attended 1,002.
"As of Dec. 31, Herb stated that he no longer could participate actively in funerals. I tried to talk him into staying another year because next year is 60 years, but we're keeping him on as an active member and he is in charge of the trustees," Rigard said.
Rigard also reported that over the past year, members of the Burial Detail had taken part in 39 military funerals, as well as in services associated with the Memorial Day and Veterans Day celebrations. Detail members also placed crosses at the St. Mary's Church before Memorial Day, assisted with Wreaths Across America and carried the colors for the grand opening ceremony at the Elk Country Visitor Center.
