Sunny weather welcomes 2012 Elk County Fair

The runner-up was Christina Harlan, 17, of St. Marys. The new junior queen was Olivia Catalone, 13, of St. Marys, with Mackenzie Ryan, 13, of St. Marys as runner-up. The fair princess title was awarded to Grace Mattivi, 9, of Kersey, with the first runner-up being Alexia Catalone, 10, of Kersey.

Organizers celebrated the first day of the 38th annual Elk County Fair on Tuesday evening during the annual Opening Ceremony held on the George A. Swanson Memorial Stage. Fair Board Member Merv Kemmer acted as the emcee for the ceremony and introduced various officials, including state Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Elk/Clearfield), Elk County Commissioners Janis A. Kemmer and Daniel R. Freeburg, Johnsonburg Mayor Dave Zilkofski, Fox Township Supervisor Randy Gradizzi and Elk County Prothonotary Susanne Straub Schneider, along with several members of the fair board.
As is tradition, a new fair court was crowned as well. This year there were 14 princess candidates, nine junior queen and two queen candidates. The 2012 Elk County Fair Queen is Shannon Geer, 18, a graduate of St. Marys Area High School who will be attending Clarion University in the fall. The fair princess title was awarded to Grace Mattivi, 9, of Kersey, with the first runner-up being Alexia Catalone, 10, of Kersey. A total of nine candidates vied for the princess title. The Elk County Fair is taking place this week from 4-10 p.m. on weekdays and Saturday from noon-11 p.m.
