Thomas A. Herbstritt, 81, of 106 Catalina Road, St. Marys, died on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 at his home following an illness of the past seven months.
He was born March 12, 1930 in St. Marys, son of the late Floyd C. and Catherine Cheatle Herbstritt. On Oct. 25, 1952, in Byrnedale, he married Mary J. Snelick, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys Public High School, Class of 1948. He was a corporal in the U.S. Marines, having served during the Korean War. He was employed as a machinist by Stackpole Carbon Corporation. He also attended electronics school in Johnstown and operated a private radio and television repair service.
He was a member of Queen of the World Church, the American Legion Post #103 and the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club. He coached baseball for many years, and was a hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors and working in his garden. He also enjoyed singing and writing music. His pride and joy was his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Georgia (Patrick) Wehler of St. Marys; three sons, Michael T. Herbstritt and his wife, Margaret "Peggy" of Bellefonte, Brian Herbstritt and his wife Elizabeth "Betsy" of St. Marys, and Timothy Herbstritt and his wife Becky of St. Marys; 15 grandchildren, Jennifer Herbstritt and her husband Brad Updegrove, Joseph Herbstritt, Stephanie Herbstritt, Tanya (Mike) Gregori, Nicole (J.D.) Brakefield, Kristin Pichler and Jason, Travis Wehler and his wife Michelle, Amber (Josh) Meyer, Sara, Lacey, Andrew, Kyle, Jeffrey, Zachary and Nicholas Herbstritt; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marguerite (Midge) Fritz Lenze, and Sr. Helen Herbstritt, OSB, both of St. Marys; and two brothers, Maurice Herbstritt and his wife Eleanor of St. Marys, and Roger Herbstritt and his wife Ann of Virginia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeremy Herbstritt of Bellefonte; two great-grandchildren, Angel Boy and Baby Boy Gregori; three sisters, Rita and Catherine Herbstritt, who died in childhood, and Anne Herbstritt Kennedy of Allegany, N.Y.; and two brothers, Mark Herbstritt and James F. (Bud) Herbstritt.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas A. Herbstritt will be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011 at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Daniel Wolfel, OSB, officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Friday from 5-8 p.m.
