Turkey Trotters turn out in large numbers for annual 5K

For a number of area residents when it comes to Thanksgiving traditions, participating in the Schlimm family's annual Turkey Trot, a 5K walk/run to raise money for prostate cancer research, is becoming as normal as sitting down for a turkey dinner and enjoying an afternoon with family and friends.
According to Nikki (Schlimm) Kashner, around 120 walkers and runners participated in this year's event. The course begins at the home of Kashner's parents, Andy and Pam Schlimm, on the corner of Earth and Light roads in St. Marys. Participants travel down Earth Road and along SR 255 to the St. Marys Area High School. They then loop through the various levels of the school's parking lot, and then retrace their steps back to the Schlimm residence.
Unlike last year, the weather was more cooperative; while it was overcast and chilly on Thursday morning, it was not raining or snowing.
"No rain is a good thing," Kashner said prior to the event. "We're just happy to be able to do this again."
The Turkey Trot was first held seven years ago and has grown each year. Proceeds from the event benefit the Prostate Urologic Program at UPMC, and this year Kashner noted that the goal was to make at least $1,200.
