JAY TWP. – Two area teenagers were killed Wednesday evening following an ATV crash that occurred at 9:45 p.m. along Mt. Zion Road, 1,542 feet east of Old Dodge Road. According to a report issued by the Ridgway-based Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred as a 2010 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO was traveling east on Mt. Zion Road, which is a gravel-improved dirt roadway. The ATV was occupied by a 16-year-old driver of St. Marys and his 16-year-old male passenger of Weedville. Neither of the victims were identified, both due to their status as minors and pending notification of family members.
According to police, as the ATV was traversing a righthand curve and coming downhill, the driver apparently lost control due to excessive speed for the gravel road surface. The ATV exited the roadway via the north side, whereupon it struck several trees adjacent to the road. Both occupants also impacted the trees, causing fatal injuries. Neither occupant was wearing any type of safety equipment. The primary cause of this crash was attributed to driving too fast for the conditions.
The Pennsylvania State Police were assisted at the scene by the Jay Township Volunteer Fire Department, Bennetts Valley Ambulance, St. Marys Ambulance Medic 12, and the Elk County Coroner.
It was also reported that the operator of the ATV died at the scene, while the passenger died at a local hospital.
According to the St. Marys Area High School website, the victims were identified as Allen Gursky and Steven Glatt, both students at St. Marys Area High School. The St. Marys Area High School has announced that grief counselors will be available in the school library beginning at 11 a.m. today and Monday.
