Representatives from Johnson Controls recently presented an update to the St. Marys Area School District School Board of Directors of the nearly $4 million renovation project taking place within the district.
Gary Sipe, onsite manager of facility improvements for Johnson Controls, explained the details, emphasizing that all projects were geared at making the numerous school buildings energy-efficient.
The lighting projects at South St. Marys Street, Bennetts Valley and Fox Township elementary schools, as well as at the St. Marys Area High School and Middle School were completed on Feb. 18; however, a few small items remain to be completed. The district expects to receive approximately $54,800 in rebates as part of its lighting project.
Crews also fixed minor problems with the gaps in windows at SSMSE. A new chiller unit is being installed at the high school on April 15 as well as related pipe work. Sipe added that because the new chiller has been delayed until April, a temporary chiller may be brought in if necessary.
Work on replacing the high school pool's heater and pumps is expected to be completed by May 25. As discussed at a prior meeting, the installation of the new pool cover will require the scoreboard to be raised three feet in order to make room for the spools for the cover. Record boards will also be moved as well. The cover is expected to take between 3-4 days to install. All of this work is scheduled to take place this month.
Once new boilers are installed at the high school, Sipe said the building's hot/cold water loop balance will be ready by the start of next school year in August.
