Updates on construction projects provided to SMASD
Among the topics discussed at the St. Marys Area School District Board of School Directors workshop on Thursday evening were an update on the various construction projects within the district and the playing of the national anthem at select sporting events.Mark Romain, head of maintenance for the district, reported that he and a member of the administration met with representatives from Johnson Controls on Feb. 3 to access the status of the construction projects. For the most part, the lighting projects have been completed, with new lights installed inside the high school gymnasium, as well as at South St. Marys Street, Fox Township and Bennetts Valley elementary schools. Motion detectors have been installed in classrooms to monitor when the rooms are not in use in order to shut off lights to save energy. Infrared detectors also measure the temperatures inside the rooms.A new computer and software system has been installed inside the maintenance office. The web-based software may be accessed by authorized personnel outside of school property to allow constant monitoring of school systems.According to Romain, one of the upcoming projects is the installation of a pool cover, which will be mounted to the wall in which the scoreboard is currently situated. Johnson Control staff will raise the scoreboard and record boards approximately three feet higher in order to accommodate the new pool cover. He added that a few minor issues still remain with the building envelope; however, that project is completed for the most part.SMASD Activities Director Terry Straub also presented information pertaining to the playing of the national anthem at district sporting events.
