Victor J. "Yitter" Zawatski

Victor J. "Yitter" Zawatski, 93, of Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys and formerly of Johnsonburg, died Thursday afternoon, March 1, 2012 at UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie following a short illness.
He was born Oct. 2, 1918 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Vincent and Leokadja Walczak Zawatski.
He married Gertrude Ann Votano on Aug. 2, 1942 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 8, 2002.
He resided in St. Marys for the past three years after residing in Johnsonburg for most of his life. He attended Johnsonburg High School. He was also a member of Holy Rosary Church; the American Legion; the Piedmont Club; and the St. Joseph's Society, where he served as treasurer for many years. He was a WWII Army veteran, serving overseas as a Sergeant with the Service Company 112th Regt., 28th Div. He served in the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge and other battles in the European Theatre. He was also a POW in Germany. He was employed by Penntech Papers in Johnsonburg for 51 years, retiring in 1985.
He is survived by a daughter, Rita, Mrs. Paul T. Rupprecht of St. Marys; a granddaughter, Dori, Mrs. Robert Sekelsky of Wilcox; a grandson, David Rupprecht; and a brother, Alan Zawatski of Wilcox.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Stella Slovatki Zawatski; two brothers, Walter and Edmund Zawatski; and two sisters, Adeline Costanzo and Pauline Neubert.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Victor J. Zawatski will be conducted at Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg on Monday, March 5 at 11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Joseph Czarkowski, pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Tidioute.
Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Johnsonburg.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg, on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.
Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg-Wilcox Servicemen's Detail. Detail members are asked to assemble at the funeral home on Monday morning at 10:15 a.m.
