Lady Dutch rally to defeat Clearfield 61-53 |

By JIM MULCAHY Daily Press staff The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team staged a fourth quarter rally to defeat the Clearfield Lady Bisons by a 61-53 score last night at Clearfield. Going into the final eight minutes of play, Clearfield was up by a 42-33 score. The Lady Dutch, led by Kayla Hoohuli’s 19 fourth period points, outscored the Lady Bisons by a 28-11 margin in the final eight minutes to win the game. “I thought we played nice defense in the fourth quarter and I thought Leanne Levenduski did a nice job coming off the bench,” said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson. “Second half rebounding by (Kayla) Hoohuli, (Mandy) Stinchcomb and (Megan) Herbstritt were key to the win,” said the coach.
“It was a good win, a great effort to overcome a fourth quarter deficit and win by eight, against a very determined Clearfield squad,” commented coach Swanson. The Lady Dutch offense was led by Kayla Hoohuli with 33 points, 19 in the fourth quarter. Her points came on 10 twos, three threes and a four for six night from the foul line. Gina Pelgrin and Mandy Stinchcomb each added 10 points. Pelgrin scored her points on four field goals and a two for two night from the foul line. Stinchcomb scored her points on four field goals and a two for four night from the line. Clearfield was led by Alanna Luzier with 17 points on four twos and three threes. Jayme Ryan and Annie Janocko each added 12 points. Ryan scored her points on four threes while Janocko got her points on one field goal and a 10 for 13 night from the foul line. The first eight minutes of the game found Clearfield outscoring the Lady Dutch 15-12. Luzier led Clearfield with seven while Hoohuli led St. Marys with six. In the second stanza, the Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Bisons 7-5 to cut the Clearfield lead to 20-19 at the half. Gina Pelgrin led St. Marys with three points. Luzier and Amber Byerly each had two for the Lady Bisons. The Lady Bisons put 22 points on their side of the board in the third quarter while St. Marys scored 14 as Clearfield took a 42-33 lead. Luzier had eight to lead Clearfield while Hoohuli had seven for the Lady Dutch. St. Marys scored 28 fourth quarter points to Clearfield’s 11 to come from behind to win the game 61-53. Hoohuli led St. Marys with 19 points while Janocko led Clearfield with six foul shots.
Game notes The Lady Dutch are now 6-0 on the year and 1-0 in District 9 League play.
St. Marys returns to action Saturday when they travel to DuBois Central to take on the Lady Cardinals in a non-league game. Junior varsity tip off is set for 6 p.m. with varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m.

JV’s win The Lady Dutch junior varsity squad used a big third quarter to pick up a 34-32 win over Clearfield. Clearfield took a 6-4 first period lead. St. Marys came back to take a 15-13 halftime lead by outscoring Clearfield 11-7 in the second period. The Lady Dutch outscored Clearfield 16-10 in the third period to lead 27-17. The Lady Bisons outscored the Lady Dutch 7-3 in the fourth quarter to cut the Lady Dutch margin of victory to 34-32.
