Currently employed at OpenDNS, a small Silicon Valley company in San Francisco, CA, St. Marys native Cory Krug is also an avid photographer. “This picture symbolizes both my view on the art of photography and a turning point in my life. It’s a self-portrait taken about two weeks prior to starting my job out here,” said Krug.

St. Marys native Cory Krug is currently an engineer at a small Silicon Valley company called OpenDNS in San Francisco, CA.
Cory is the son of Fred and Diane Krug and the older brother of Kristy Krug, all of St. Marys. He is also the grandson of Charles and Betty Tesauro.
Growing up in St. Marys, Krug was a paper carrier for The St. Marys Daily Press for seven years and worked at the local Shop N’ Save while he was in high school. He was also employed as a marketing intern at GE Sensing during the summer of 2006.
He graduated from St. Marys Area High School in 2002.
“After graduating high school I had a short summer before beginning classes at Pittsburgh Technical Institute in Oakdale, just outside of Pittsburgh,” explained Krug. “I majored in Computer Network Systems.”
Krug was named to the Dean’s List during each of his semesters at Pittsburgh Technical Institute.
“After graduating there, I had another very short summer,” added Krug. “I continued my education at Penn State Behrend where I majored in Management Information Systems, or MIS for short.”
Upon graduation from Behrend, Krug moved to San Francisco, CA to find a job.
“It was my ultimate motivation not to be like everyone else around me and instead find something I would truly enjoy doing,” said Krug. “I moved here on September 9, 2007 and began applying for various jobs. In mid-October I saw an ad on Craigslist.com for a Jr. level engineer at OpenDNS and I think it was only one day after sending in my cover letter and resume that I received a call from them. After interviewing, I knew it was the job I wanted and so I took it.”
“I’m an engineer despite going to school for more of a business and information systems degree at Behrend,” added Krug. “My job title is Jr. Developer and I’m responsible for all kinds of small to medium sized projects ranging from maintaining our internal dashboard to helping deploy new features. I build tools to better the information age.”
Krug noted that the job essentially chose him instead of the other way around.
“Ever since I was 12 or 13 years old, I’ve been dabbling with different programming languages,” explained Krug. “Writing code has always been interesting to me. Building tools especially peaked my interest at the age of 14 when I wrote a small tool and made some money from it. Since that time, I’ve been in and out of the programming world.”
Krug also noted that he is fairly active on the internet. He maintains his own blog and, as an avid photographer, posts many of his pictures in a gallery on the Flicker photo hosting website.
He also described how different San Francisco is compared to St. Marys.
“I feel like San Francisco is its own world. You either love it or hate it,” said Krug. “You either fit in or you don’t. I was told that it’s a city of misfits and almost everyone here grew up somewhere else. That statement is more than true; there are people here from all over the country.”
Though his job and life in California keeps him fairly busy, Krug hopes to make it back to St. Marys a few times a year.
