The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch recorded their 16th victory of the season last night when they held on to defeat the Lady Bisons of Clearfield Area High School, 55-47, in a District 9 League encounter at the “Dutch Oven”.
Clearfield had the lead once in the ball game and that came at the 4:10 mark of the third period when they went up by a single point, 34-33. It only took the Lady Dutch about 20 seconds to regain the lead, which they kept the rest of the game. Clearfield came up with their best showing in the first six minutes of the third quarter as they outplayed the Lady Dutch in that stretch, but then St. Marys took control and eventually won the game by an eight point margin.
“I was extremely pleased with our board work tonight, especially that of Gina Pelgrin (12 boards), Emily Hathorn (10 boards) and Kayla Hoohuli (6 boards). Clearfield was a little bigger then us inside but our girls really battled hard and claimed more than their share of rebounds,” said Coach Bob Swanson following the game. “I told our guards that we had to play some very good defense and force turnovers in order to win the game tonight. Our guards played well, limiting the Lady Bison to just two three point field goals, while helping force 24 turnovers.”

“I really wasn’t pleased with our play in the third quarter, especially in the first four or five minutes as Clearfield was controlling the boards, out hustling us and getting to the loose balls. As a result they were able to take the lead, but our girls settled down and took control later in the period to retake the lead and hold on for the victory,” said Swanson. “I was happy with the time we were able to take off the clock down the stretch with our spread offense. The girls worked the ball around then when they saw the chance for the lay-up they took it to put the game way for us.”
Gina Pelgrin was the leading scorer for the Lady Dutch last evening with 16 points to go along with her 12 rebounds. Kayla Hoohuli had 15 points, six rebounds, five steals, eight assists and three key blocked shots. Tammy Yanak, who hit two key threes in the third period, finished with eight points. Emily Hathorn also had eight points to go along with her 10 rebounds. Mandy Stinchcomb had six points, and Tia Cunningham two points.
For the Clearfield squad, Amber Byerly had 14 points, Elizabeth Peters and Alanna Luzier 11 points each. Jayme Ryan had seven, Gwenn Porter and Annie Janocko two each.
St. Marys took a 4-0 lead on two buckets by Pelgrin, but Clearfield tied the game up with two of their own. Stinchcomb, Cunningham and Pelgrin then scored the next six points to put St. Marys on top 10-4. Two more Clearfield buckets were followed by another Stinchcomb field goal to make it 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Clearfield’s Ryan opened the second period with a bucket but Pelgrin answered with one for the Lady Dutch. A Clearfield foul goals was followed by field goals by Yanak and Pelgrin to make the score 18-11 in favor of the Lady Dutch. The Lady Bisons then hit two straight field goals followed by two field goals each by Hoohuli and Pelgrin and a foul goal by Pelgrin to make it 27-15. Clearfield battled back to cut the lead to 27-22 then Hoohuli hit a three just before the half ended to make the halftime score 30-22.
Peters scored the first five points of the third quarter for the Lady Bisons to cut the lead to 30-27. A field goal by Hoohuli and a foul goal by Pelgrin made it 33-27, but the Lady Bisons scored the next seven points to take a 34-33 lead at the 4:10 mark of the period. The Lady Dutch regained the lead seconds later when Hathorn hit a field goal, then Yanak added a three to make it 38-34. Another Clearfield bucket was followed by Yanak’s second three and another field goal by Hathorn to make the score 43-36 at the end of three.
Hoohuli put the Lady Dutch up 45-36 to start the fourth quarter, then Ryan and Hathorn exchanged buckets to make it 47-38. Clearfield hit four straight foul goals to cut the lead to 47-42 at the 3:55 mark. Hathorn and Stinchcomb each added a field goal and Hoohuli two field goals as the Lady Dutch put the game away with a 55-42 lead with less than a minute remaining in the game. In the final minute the Lady Bison scored two foul goals and a three to cut the final margin of victory for the Lady Dutch to eight points, 55-47.
