Lady Crusaders beat Clearfield 53-38 |

By JIM MULCAHY Daily Press staff The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team won their 11th straight game with a 53-38 District 9 League win over the Clearfield Bisons last night at the ECCHS gym. The Lady Crusaders are now 9-0 in District 9 League play. The Lady Crusaders used a strong first half last night to secure the victory as they outscored the Lady Bisons 30-10 in the first 16 minutes of the contest. “It was a good league win,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner. “We came out strong and played well in the first half. We didn’t play with a lot of energy in the second half,” said the coach. “In the first half we did a great job of rebounding but we did not do as good a job in the second half,” noted Pistner. “Again we had balanced scoring with three people in double figures,” said the coach.
“We have a big game Saturday. It is an important District 9 League game and our last game before the (District 9) seedings,” added coach Pistner. Kaitlyn Geci led the Elk Catholic offense with 16 points on seven field goals and a two for two night from the foul line. Bre Grimone scored 13 points on six field goals and a one for two night from the foul line. Emily Detsch added 12 points on five field goals and a two for two night from the foul line. Amber Byerly led Clearfield with 15 points on seven field goals and a one for two night from the foul line. Annie Janocko was next with eight points. The Lady Crusaders started out on the right foot last night as they opened the game with a 10-0 run. Detsch had eight of those points and Geci added two. Clearfield got a bucket from Byerly to make the score 10-2 after the first period of play in favor of Elk Catholic. Clearfield’s Janocko scored the first points of the second period to make the score 10-4. Detsch and Grimone scored to make ti 14-4 with 6:34 left in the first half. Janocko scored again for the Lady Bisons. Elk went on an 8-0 run as Geci scored twice as did Grimone making it 22-6 with 3:58 left in the half. Gwen Porter scored for Clearfield to make it 22-8. Elk’s Abbey Salter and Janocko traded buckets. Kirstie Pistner made it 26-10 at the 1:54 mark. About a minute later, Geci made it 28-10. Geci made the halftime score 30-10 with a field goal. A bucket by Pistner and a foul shot by Grimone made it 33-10 early in the third period. Byerly and Grimone traded buckets. Alanna Luzier hit a three for Clearfield. Geci and Byerly exchanged buckets with Byerly adding a foul shot. Grimone gave Elk a 39-18 lead with 4:33 left in the period. The Lady Bisons scored the final eight points of the period to cut Elk’s lead to 39-26 with one quarter of play remaining. Pistner and Geci scored off steals to open the fourth quarter, 43-26. Byerly scored for Clearfield with Salter sinking a foul shot. Byerly and Grimone traded buckets, 46-30. Janocko hit a two and Sarah Kovalick hit a three for Clearfield, 46-35, with 1:47 left. Salter converted a three-point play at the 1:38 mark. Elk would score four more points on two foul shots by Detsch and two by Geci, 53-35. Kovalick hit a three with four second remaining to make the final score 53-38 in favor of Elk Catholic.
Game notes The Lady Crusaders are now 20-1 on the season and 9-0 in District 9 League play. They finished 10-0 in Allegheny Mountain League regular season play.
The Lady Crusaders return to action Saturday afternoon when they play host to the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch in a District 9 League game. Game times are 12:30 p.m. for junior varsity and 2 p.m. for varsity.

JV’s win The Elk Catholic junior varsity squad picked up a 39-26 win in the preliminary game. Elk took an 8-2 first period lead. They outscored the Lady Bisons 9-6 in the second period for a 17-8 halftime lead. The Lady Crusaders outscored Clearfield 10-6 in the third period. Both teams scored 12 fourth quarter points, making the final score 39-26 in favor of ECC. ECC scoring: Dani Cassels 2, Taylor Frank 9, Karly Carnovale 7, Ellie Petrosky 10, Lauren Evers 6, Anna Hawkins 5. Clearfield scoring: Lori Zalno 15, Johanna Ryan 2, Sarah Kovalick 4, Madison Sopic 5.
