By Amy Cherry Daily Press Staff Recently, the Elk County Community Foundation awarded scholarships to several post-secondary students.
The Joseph A. Williams Medical Scholarship, Michele Campbell Memorial Nursing Scholarship, and the Greiner/Roof Memorial Law Scholarship are the only scholarships available to students already enrolled in an accredited program at a post-secondary educational institution. “These hard working students beat out many worthy candidates to receive their respective scholarships,” noted Paula Fritz Eddy, executive director of the Community Foundation. Lindsay Bish, a 2003 graduate of St. Marys Area High School, was the recipient of the Greiner/Roof Memorial Law Scholarship. Bish graduated from University of Pittsburgh in 2007 and is now pursuing a law degree at the Villanova University School of Law. She is the daughter of Rick and Julie Bish of St. Marys. The Greiner/Roof Memorial Law Scholarship was created in memory of the Honorable Paul B. Greiner and the Honorable Vernon D. Roof, past President Judges of the 59th Judicial District of Pennsylvania. Judge Greiner served as President Judge from 1964 until 1986, after which he served as a senior judge until his death at age 83 in 1999. Judge Roof’s tenure on the bench was much shorter, as he served as President Judge from 1996 until 2002, when he died at age 51. Both Judge Greiner and Judge Roof were respected and renowned as fair and impartial jurists not only in Elk and Cameron Counties, but throughout the Commonwealth. This year the Michele Campbell Memorial Nursing Scholarship was awarded to Katie Flynn and Kathleen Newell. Michele Campbell was a hard working and dedicated nursing student at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. As the number one student in her class, Campbell was dedicated to helping others and learning to be the best nurse she could. Katie is the daughter of Eugene and Cynthia Flynn of Kersey and was a 2005 Graduate of Elk County Catholic High School. She is attending Penn State University. Kathleen is the daughter of Jeffrey and Christine Newell. She is attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Joseph A. Williams Medical Scholarship was awarded to Brian T. McQuone and Amy Brehm, both of St. Marys. Brian is the son of Eugene and Karen McQuone and is pursuing a degree from Lake Erie School of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a graduate of St. Marys Area High School. Brehm graduated from Elk County Catholic High School in 2001 and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. She is pursuing her degree at Penn State Milton S. Hershey College of Medicine. Her parents are Paul and Patty Brehm of St. Marys. This scholarship was named for Joseph A. Williams who had worked in the lumber industry for over 67 years. Williams was always interested in civic matters, holding leadership positions with numerous community organizations including Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital. The Elk County Community Foundation has awarded 74 scholarships totaling over $66,000 to deserving students this spring. Additional ECCF scholarships are awarded to seniors graduating from local high schools. The Elk County Community Foundation is looking to expand their scholarship offerings to include more post-secondary students. If interested in establishing a named scholarship fund to support such students, contact the Community Foundation at 834-2125.
