Riders vie for position headed into the first turn at the beginning of the first moto of the Motocross class on High Point on Sunday.
By Becky Polaski After finishing second overall to teammate Austin Stroupe in the first round of the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship presented by FMF at Glen Helen Raceway, Ryan Villopoto has picked up the pace and, unlike last year, no one appears to be close to challenging him.
He easily moved through the pack in both of Sunday's Motocross Lites motos at High Point Raceway in Mount Morris to take the overall victory with a pair of first place finishes. James Stewart also remains perfect after the fourth round of the series. Suzuki's Mike Alessi pulled the holeshot in both motos in the Motocross class, but Stewart was able to pass him each time and pull out to a considerable lead to easily win each moto and take the overall victory. Alessi finished second overall and Davi Millsaps was third. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the weekend was GEICO Powersports Honda's Jake Weimer taking second overall in the MX Lites class with moto finishes of second and fifth, respectively. Suzuki's Ryan Dungey was third overall with moto finishes of sixth and second. Inclement weather conditions on Saturday forced the postponement of timed qualifying for the Motocross class until Sunday morning. Group A and B in the Motocross Lites class were both able to get one session on the track on Saturday afternoon before the rest of the day's activities were postponed. The Motocross Lites Last Chance Qualifier was also held Sunday morning. The weather did improve considerably later in the day on Saturday for the pit bike races and Ten Man Push concert. Heavy fog blanketed the area Sunday morning but soon gave way to blue skies and the track was in perfect condition for the afternoon's motos. Riders have this coming weekend off and will return to action at Thunder Valley Motocross Park in Lakewood, Colorado for the series' first ever night race which will be held on June 28. |
