Council members discuss road issues

During Monday night's meeting, council members discussed bids that had been made regarding the City's 2008 resurfacing program.
Initially 10 streets were on list and bids were received from three companies, New Enterprise, Hawbaker, and HRI.
City Manager David Greene explained that the maximum number of streets that could be done with this year's fund was three but added that there was another option. "If we take money from next year's street paving, that is we'll use capital reserve money that we have, and put it in this year's budget and we can go ahead and do eight of these streets this year," explained Greene. "We think because of the way oil prices have been going up that it would be a wise move for us to go ahead and move that money into this year's budget, go ahead and do these eight streets, and then forgo street paving for next year and kind of wait out this oil situation to see where its going to go. We do have the funds available in the capital reserve to move that money over. We would be able to get eight streets done this year, and that includes the subsurface works that needs to be done with the street crew."
Greene added that the roads should hold up for 10 to 12 years due to the subsurface work that will be done.
The 10 streets originally being considered were Hall Avenue, Robin Road, Lemans Road, Fern Road, Hickory Road, Teaberry Road, Villa Road, Hemlock Road, Sara Road, and Ford Road.
Hickory Road and Fern Road were the two that were planned to be removed from the list.
Councilman Tom Farley asked whether it would be possible to include Fern and Hickory Roads on the list and remove another road, such as Sara Road.
Other members of council noted that Sara Road has a high volume of bus traffic during the school year and also that many individuals use Ford and Sara Roads instead of going down the Million Dollar Highway.
Ultimately, council members decided to leave Sara Road on the list and continue with the suggestion to remove Fern and Hickory Roads.
It was suggested that the bid be awarded to HRI Incorporated in the amount of $522,156 and council members voted to approve the bid.
