By JIM MULCAHY Daily Press staff The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team defeated the Clearfield Lady Bisons by an 8-1 score Thursday afternoon in a match played at Clearfield.
At first singles, Elk’s Kaitlyn Geci defeated Emily VonGunden 6-0, 6-0. At second singles, Kylie Auman of ECC beat Julia Coleson 6-1, 6-0. Elk Catholic’s Sandy Levenduski downed Madison Sopic 6-0, 6-2 at third singles. At fourth singles, Marissa Bauer demonstrated superlative tennis in defeating Kayla White 6-0, 6-0. At fifth singles, Elk’s Mary Kate Minnick closed out the match’s singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sue Coleson. At first doubles, Elk’s Ally Brock and Shanelle Housler defeated Angela Moore and Kristen McKingis 8-0. At second doubles, Loreal Housler and Megan Cotter of ECC beat Sierra Grice and Suzanne Coleson 8-0. Clearfield’s Jenna Cowder and Tori Hallstrom beat Megan Fritz and Chloe Vaneerdern 8-3 at third doubles. At fourth doubles, Abby Meyer and Stephanie Smith of ECC downed Hillary Buck and Heather Learish 8-0. “It is obvious that Clearfield is in a rebuilding year as the Lady Bisons have historically been one of District 9’s stronger AAA teams and I know their coach personally and know him to be both an individually strong player as well as an excellent teacher of the game,” said ECCHS coach Gordon Daghir. “However, I do not mean to detract in any way from the magnificent tennis all our young ladies played today. To win five singles matches by winning 60 games while losing only three is, to say the least, something just short of phenomenal. Additionally the same can also be said of our doubles players as they won 27 games while losing only eight,” said Daghir. “I was especially pleased to be able to play many of our younger players in the doubles matches. These eight girls consisted of one senior, two juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen. They all played so very well as is evidenced by the scores of their matches,” added the coach. Elk Catholic, now 9-1 on the year, will host Brockway on Tuesday at Benzinger and Memorial Parks at 3:30 p.m.
