By JIM MULCAHY Daily Press staff The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team saw their record slip to 5-6 on the season as they lost a 3-0 match to the Clearfield Lady Bisons last night at the SMAHS gym
The Lady Bisons won the first game by a 25-17 margin. They took the second game 25-20 and won the third game by a 27-25 score. The first game went back and forth after St. Marys had taken a 3-0 lead early. Clearfield was able to come back and tie the game at seven then slipped out to a 12-9 lead. Clearfield maintained three-point lead taking an 18-15 lead. The Lady Bisons scored four straight points to lead 23-15. St. Marys got the serve back and cut it to 23-17. Clearfield won the last two points to win the game 25-17. Just as the first game was, the second game was close until Clearfield broke open a 6-6 contest to lead 9-6. The Lady Bisons increased their lead to 19-13. St. Marys cut it to 19-14. With Joesey Williams serving, St. Marys got two points off of aces, 19-16. A kill by Gina Pelgrin made it 19-17. Pelgrin cut it to 19-18 with another kill. A carry gave Clearfield the 20-18 lead. A kill by Heidi Rupprecht gave St. Marys the serve back. The teams traded points, 21-19. Clearfield went on to win 25-20. The third game of the night went the way of the first two, going back and forth. With the game tied at 12, the Lady Dutch went up 15-12 behind the serving of Tia Cunningham. However, Clearfield ran off eight straight points to take a 20-15 lead. Clearfield slipped out to a 22-20 lead. With Casey Gahn serving, the Lady Dutch got a kill from Rupprecht and an ace by Gahn, 22-22. St. Marys went up 23-22 then 24-22 on a kill by Becky Hoffman. Clearfield cut it to 24-23 then tied it on an ball out bounds. Clearfield went up 25-24. A point by Rupprecht tied the game at 25-all. Clearfield won the next two points to win the game 27-25 and the match 3-0. Gina Pelgrin led the Lady Dutch with seven kills in game three and three in game two. “Joesey Williams and Angie Dempsey had good defensive games and Heidi Rupprecht had a goo game,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt. “We couldn’t get the intensity tonight. The overall atmosphere in the gym was a little dead. We’re hoping to bring it up with intensity on Thursday night. We hope to see more people here with a little more enthusiasm,” added coach Vogt. In junior varsity action St. Marys won 2-1. Clearfield took the first game 25-19. The Lady Dutch won the second game 25-20 and won the third game 15-12 to win the match. The Lady Dutch will return to action Thursday when they play host to the Kane Lady Wolves. Junior varsity action begins at 6 p.m. with varsity action to follow.
