By JIM MULCAHY Daily Press staff The Clearfield Lady Bison soccer team handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch a 3-1 setback Tuesday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.
Clearfield opened the contest as the aggressor as they kept the ball in the St. Marys had of the field early on. With 32:37 left in the first half the Lady Bisons scored making it 1-0. Less than a minute later, Clearfield got their second goal of the game when the St. Marys keeper came out as Clearfield took advantage of the open net to take a 2-0 lead with 31:49 left in the first half. The Lady Dutch had their first scoring opportunity at the 30:18 mark of the first half. The remainder of the first half saw both teams having scoring opportunities but neither could capitalize. Clearfield had a breakaway with 5:01 left in the first half but the shot went high. Clearfield outshot St. Marys 12-7 in the first half. St. Marys had three corner kicks to Clearfield’s two. The Lady Dutch came out in the second half and put the pressure on the Clearfield defense. The Lady Dutch got their first shot off with 37:58 left in the match. A little later St. Marys had a nice crossing pass but no one could get to it. Clearfield made the score 3-0 when they were able to put the ball just out of reach of the Lady Dutch keeper with 32 minutes left. A shot by Clearfield glanced off the crossbar with 29 minutes left in the contest. With 6:04 left in the contest the Lady Dutch got on the board when Beth Lyons scored making it 3-1. St. Marys had another opportunity with a penalty kick with 1:45 left but the shot went high as Clearfield would go on to win 3-1. “Overall I was happy with the way we played today,” said Lady Dutch coach Kelly Carr. “Clearfield is one of the best teams we will face during the regular season and we held our own,” said the coach. “It was a solid team effort. We were marking up well and had solid team passes,” added coach Carr. St. Marys, now 8-6 on the season, will host DuBois Area on Thursday at 4 p.m. and host Ridgway Saturday at 10 a.m.
