By JIM MULCAHY Daily Press staff CLEARFIELD - The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team ended their regular season last night with a 29-6 loss to the Clearfield Bisons.
The loss gives the Dutch a 6-4 record while Clearfield improves to 8-2. These two teams will meet again next weekend to determine the District 9 Class AAA champion. St. Marys advanced to the championship game when Bradford lost to Corry by a 28-27 score. “We got beat in every facet of the game tonight. We were beaten by the better football team tonight,” said St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm. “I congratulate Clearfield on winning the league (Mountain Athletic Football Conference Nittany League) title,” said the coach. “I am looking forward to next week to see what we can do. Clearfield is a good football team and there is a reason they are the league champion,” added coach Schlimm. The Dutch offense was led by Mitchell Straub with 40 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Greg Simchick was two of 10 for 75 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Michael Feldbauer caught both Simchick passes. One reception was good for about 30 yards, but as he was being dragged down, Feldbauer lateraled the ball to James Swanson who carried it to the Clearfield 12 yard line. That pass play covered 63 yards. Clearfield was led on the ground by Isiah Morgan with 80 yards on 22 carries. Quarterback Jarrin Campman carried the ball 20 times for 68 yards. Campman was four of six in the passing department for 15 net yards. Brandon Sass was one for one for 43 yards on a halfback option. St. Marys won the coin toss but deferred to the second half. Clearfield started on their own 32 after a four yard return by Cruise Kerr. The first place from scrimmage, Campman passed to Sass in the backfield. Sass set up and found Trey Campman open on a 43 yard halfback option that put the ball at the Dutchmen’s 25 yard line. Morgan gained five yards on first down and four yards on second down. He gained six yard on third down to the St. Marys 10 and a first down. Campman gained six to the four. Morgan was held for no gain on second down. On third and goal, Morgan gained a yard. On fourth and goal, Campman went the final three yards to give the Bisons a 6-0 lead. Parker Herrington added the PAT to make it 7-0 with 7:59 left in the first period. The Dutch started from their own 34 after a 21 yard return by Straub. Two plays later they were back at their 29 and were forced to punt. Clearfield began a 15-play drive that covered 47 yards. The Bisons were helped on the drive by a facemask penalty against the Dutch. On a first and goal from the four, Campman went the final distance making it 13-0. Herrington made it 14-0 with 10:10 left in the first half. The Dutch failed to pick up a first down and were forced to punt. The Bisons were forced to punt on their next possession as the Dutch took over on their own 17. On first down, Clearfield’s Nick Redden intercepted a Dutch pass on the 12 yard line and returned it to the three yard line. Three plays later, Campman scored again to make it 21-0 as Herrington added the PAT with 4:55 left. Neither team scored the remainder of the half as Clearfield led 21-0 at the half. The Dutch picked up a first down as Kevin Hoy gained eight and Straub got two for the first down. Shane Krise gained a yard on first down. After two incomplete passes the Dutch punted. The Dutch defense stiffened and forced Clearfield to punt. Herrington’s punt was downed at the six-inch line. On first down the Clearfield defense tackled the Dutch back in the endzone for a safety making it 23-0 with 5:30 left in the third quarter. Clearfield started on the St. Marys 38 following the punt. Seven plays later Morgan scored from four yards out. The try for two failed as Clearfield led 29-0 with 1:38 left in the third quarter. The Dutch started from their own seven following the kickoff. Behind the running of Straub, Hoy and Kyle Bennett, St. Marys moved it out to the 50 before running out of downs. Clearfield was forced to punt with St. Marys taking over on their own 25. On first down, Simchick found Feldbauer open for a pass play that covered approximately 30 yards. As Feldbauer was being tackled, he lateraled to Swanson who carried it from the Clearfield 30 to the Clearfield 12. On first down again, Simchick hit Feldbauer with a pass and Feldbauer bulled his way into the endzone to make it 29-6. The PAT was blocked making it 29-6 with 2:19 left in the game. Clearfield was able to pick up a first down and run out the clock picking up the 29-6 victory. Game notes The Dutchmen ended their regular season with a 6-4 record. Next week, St. Marys will meet Clearfield for the District 9 Class AAA title. The date, site and time will be announced by District 9.
