Township plans road work

According to Roadmaster and Jay Township Supervisor Murray Lilley, the township is planning work on a number of roads beginning in April. The first road scheduled for repair is Mt. Zion Road and work is expected to begin April 5.

Weedville teen killed in early morning crash

JAY TWP. – A fatal traffic crash occurred on June 24 at 2:30 a.m. as a 17-year-old male driving a 2000 Hyundai Tiberon was pronounced dead at the scene by the Elk County Coroner. 

The collision occurred as the vehicle was traveling south on state Route 255, approximately 100 feet north of Grant Street. The vehicle left the west side of the roadway, striking the entrance of a private driveway with its undercarriage.

The vehicle continued south, along the west bank, striking a tree. After impact with the tree, the vehicle began to roll over, became airborne, striking the roadway on Grant Street. The vehicle then struck a guiderail on the south side of Grant Street and continued south, re-entering ST 255.

The operator was ejected from the vehicle, coming to rest in the middle of the roadway. The vehicle continued to travel in a southeast direction, coming to rest on the berm, where it was consumed by flames. It is unknown is the youth was wearing his seatbelt.

State police were assisted at the scene by Jay Twp. Fire Department, Penfield Fire Department, Fox Twp. Fire Department, Bennetts Valley Ambulance, St. Marys Ambulance and PennDOT.
