By Becky Polaski Staff Writer Members of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority met on Tuesday afternoon and discussed the results of the recent Household Hazardous Waste Collection.
After not meeting in May, the group addressed the collection that was held in the Keystone Powdered Metal parking lot on State Street on Saturday, May 30. According to Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner, the collection had a record number of individuals dropping off materials. One hundred forty-five vehicles dropped off roughly four tons of items. “Sevnety percent of them were from St. Marys, which makes sense since we were in St. Marys,” Titchner said. “We had about four tons, which is also the most we have ever collected.” Other topics discussed at the meeting included: • The Authority discussed a grant proposal that was made to the Stackpole-Hall Foundation in an attempt to receive funding to remodel the recycling collection location in order to make storage and offloading of materials easier. • Titchner updated Authority members about the results of the most recent plastics collection and electronics collections and Authority members also discussed options for making it easier to place plastic bottles in the containers. • Ongoing recycling collection issues in Johnsonburg were also discussed. • Veolia ES Greentree Landfill Manager Don Henrichs and Enforcement Officer Dave Stubber both gave reports to Authority members. • Authority members also discussed the Kristine Anderson Memorial Scholarship.
