St. Marys native Jude Dozor continues to make a difference at the founder and President of Give & Grow, a California-based organization designed to aid disadvantaged children in receiving an education.
Dozor currently resides in Huntington Beach, Calif. and is employed by C&D Zodiac, Inc., which funds and provides volunteers for Give & Grow.
Dozor noted that he was inspired to found the organization after reading an article about Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
“I was reading an article about Bill Gates and what a tremendous contribution Microsoft makes in the world of philanthropy - thousands and thousands of hours,” Dozor said. “Then it just dawned on me that the company I work for has over 5,000 people, which is a great community to draw upon and could make a significant difference out there.”
Dozor noted that the mission of Give & Grow is to improve education for young people.
“Our mottos is ‘A child with an education is a child with a future.’ Children who are educated are more likely to contribute to society and less likely to commit crimes,” Dozor said.
According to Dozor, Give & Grow, which was founded in 2006, performs three basic functions.
The first function is that volunteers go to school and perform major facelifts. Earlier this year, the organization performed a one-day ‘extreme-makeover’ at Faylane Elementary School in Garden Grove, Calif. The renovations included the installation of a kindergarten play area, the updating of several other play areas, and the construction of a new library.
The organizations other functions also involve helping children remain successful in school.
“We have an extensive tutoring program for young kids that we run out of our company,” Dozor said. “We also have a college scholarship program where we gave away over $30,000 this year to kids entering college.”
Dozor noted that there are over 200 individuals involved with Give & Grow and over 160 volunteers assisted with their most recent project.
Jude is the son of Patty McLaughlin, the grandson of Mary Dollinger, and the brother of Jason Dozor, all of St. Marys. He is also a 1990 graduate of Elk County Catholic High School.
More information on Give & Grow can be found on the organization’s Web site at www.giveandgrow.org.
