By Becky Polaski Staff Writer The ice skating rink at Kaulmont Park will once again be open for area residents to use during the winter months. Last year the rink was frequented by area residents.
“As soon as we get our first good freeze down there I want to start it,” St. Marys Recreation Board Chairman Kurt Nesbitt said. “I’d prefer to have it before Christmas, but the weather right now dictates that.” Nesbitt has been overseeing the ice skating program for the past several years and noted that the rink will be open on the same days and times as in the past. Those hours are from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, and 2 to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. “We’re hoping to have as big a turnout as we did last year,” Nesbitt said. On any given night Nesbitt noted that two to three dozen area residents utilized the ice skating rink last season. “On the weekends we were getting up to as many as four to five dozen people,” he added. Ice skates are available at the park for individuals to use. Nesbitt also noted that area residents who wish to donate old pairs of skates to the park are more than welcome to do so. “We’ll always take skates,” Nesbitt said. “There are lots of sizes that we can’t cover. Skates are available on a first come, first served basis. There is no charge for them and they’re always there for people to use.” Several pairs of skates were donated last year and anyone wishing to donate them this year can drop them off at City Hall, Kaulmont Park, or call Nesbitt at 781-6198 and he will pick them up.
