Lady Crusaders beat Clearfield 39-36 in D9 League play

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team remained undefeated in District 9 League play as they edged the Clearfield Area Lady Bisons by a 39-36 score last night in a game played at Clearfield.

After trailing by two at the half, the Lady Crusaders outscored Clearfield by a 21-16 margin in the second half to record the victory.

“We overcame a poor shooting night with good defense and a will to win,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner. The Lady Crusaders shot 18 percent from the field against the Lady Bisons.

“We shot the ball well from the foul line and got solid play from the bench in critical situations,” added coach Pistner. Elk County Catholic was nine of 10 from the foul line.

Emily Detsch led the Lady Crusader offense with 28 points on nine field goals and a 4-for-4 night from the foul line. Lexie Meholic was next with six points.

For Clearfield, Amber Byerly had 11 points on five field goals and a 1-for-4 night from the foul line. Jayme Ryan scored nine points on three threes.

In the first quarter of play, the Lady Bisons opened a 13-8 lead over the Lady Crusaders.

Elk County Catholic came back in the second quarter to outscore Clearfield by a 10-7 margin to cut Clearfield’s halftime lead to 20-18.

Each team scored seven third-quarter points as the Lady Bisons held on to a 27-25 lead with eight minutes remaining.

The fourth quarter saw Elk County Catholic put 14 points on their side of the board while Clearfield scored nine giving the Lady Crusaders the 39-36 victory.

Game notes

The Lady Crusaders are now 11-1 on the season and 5-0 in District 9 League play. They are 3-0 in AML play.

Elk County Catholic returns to action Friday night when they play host to the Brookville Lady Raiders. Junior varsity gets underway at 6 p.m. with the varsity set to begin at 7:30 p.m.

JV’s win

The Elk County Catholic junior varsity squad downed Clearfield by a 35-27 score.

Elk County Catholic took a 10-4 first period lead. Clearfield came back to outscore ECC 15-8 in the second period to take a 19-18 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, the Lady Crusaders outscored the Lady Bisons 12-2. In the fourth quarter, Clearfield outscored ECC 6-5 making the final score 35-27 in favor of Elk Catholic.
