Hoohuli leads Lady Dutch comeback over Clearfield |

By JIM MULCAHY Staff Writer Led by Kayla Hoohuli’s game-high 46 points, the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Clearfield Lady Bisons by a 58-48 score at the SMAHS “Dutch Oven.” After St. Marys had taken a 31-24 halftime lead, Clearfield outscored St. Marys 17-4 in the third period to take a 41-35 lead with eight minutes remaining. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Dutch outscored Clearfield 23-7 in the fourth quarter to win the game. Hoohuli scored 16 of the 23 points scored by the Lady Dutch in the final quarter. “Clearfield has a nice ball club with good inside play and good guards,” said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson. “We had a good defensive effort in the fourth quarter as Clearfield turned the ball over seven times.” “Kayla (Hoohuli) had seven rebounds to got along with her 46 points. Amanda Simbeck had five rebounds while Adair Gennocro had four rebounds and three steals,” said the coach. “It was an exciting game. Adair really worked hard and Mandy Gerarge did a nice job on the defensive end and Kayla did a nice job defensively on Byerly in the post,” commented Swanson. “It was a team effort with good team defense,” added coach Swanson.
Hoohuli’s 46 points came on one two, 12 threes and an 8-for-8 night from the foul line. Kayla’s total points and 12 threes were both school records. Gennocro was next in scoring with eight. For Clearfield, Gwenn Porter led the way with 21 points on six twos, two threes and a 3-for-4 night from the foul line. Amber Byerly scored 12 points on five field goals and a 2-for-2 night from the line. Neither team could find the range early in the contest as the first points of the game came at the 5:28 mark when Hoohuli hit the first of her 12 threes. She would later add two foul shots to make it 5-0. Byerly and Porter hit field goals to make it 5-4. A three by Hoohuli and a two by Simbeck gave St. Marys the 10-4 lead. A bucket by Byerly made it 10-6. Porter’s field goal at the buzzer closed the gap to 10-8. With 4:45 left in the first half, St. Marys held a 17-14 lead. Clearfield scored six unanswered points, two each by Elizabeth Peters, Angela Moore and Peters again as Clearfield took a 20-17 lead. Hoohuli’s three tied the game at 20. Porter sank a foul shot and hit a three to make it 24-20. Hoohuli scored the final 11 points of the second period as St. Marys led 31-24 at the half. Clearfield capitalized on four St. Marys turnovers to score the first eight points of the second half to take a 32-31 lead with 6:10 left in the third quarter. Simbeck scored for the Lady Dutch with Clearfield retaking the lead with a two, 34-33. Two foul shots by Hoohuli gave St. Marys the 35-34 lead with 4:38 left. Clearfield scored the final seven points of the third quarter to take a 41-35 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Dutch scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter as Hoohuli hit two threes and Gennocro added a two, 43-41. Byerly tied the game at 43 with Porter giving Clearfield the 46-43 lead with a three. Gennocro scored off a steal with 4:01 left then hit a three at the 3:07 mark. Hoohuli canned another three at the 2:37 mark, giving St. Marys the 51-46 lead. Another three by Hoohuli made the score 54-46 with 2:12 left. Porter cut it to 54-48 with 1:52 left. Hoohuli ran a one-person dribble spread until the 34 second mark when she was fouled by Clearfield. Kayla sank both foul shots, 56-48. Clearfield turned the ball over with 31 seconds remaining. Hoohuli converted two fouls shots with 28 seconds left to give St. Marys the hard earned 58-48 win.
Game notes The Lady Dutch are now 13-1 on the season and 5-1 in District 9 League play.
St. Marys returns to action Tuesday when they travel to DuBois Central to take on the Lady Cardinals in a non-league encounter.

JV’s lose The St. Marys junior varsity squad lost a 45-30 contest to Clearfield. St. Marys took an 8-4 first quarter lead. Clearfield came back to outscore the Lady Dutch 11-8 in the second quarter to cut the St. Marys lead to 16-15 at the half. Clearfield outscored St. Marys 16-4 in the third period and 14-10 in the fourth quarter to win the game 45-30.
