Shown is the SMAHS boys 200 yard medley and 200 free relay who recently broke two pool records It must have been déjà vu for the St. Marys Area swim and dive team when they hit the water last night for their first home meet of the season, except this time they were in their own pool.
Although the Lady Dutch narrowly missed capturing their fourth straight victory in as many meets, the boys stepped up and stole the evening coming away with a win, two pool records and a school record. This feat is somewhat reminiscent of their performance two weeks ago in Brookville. The boys’ 200 medley relay kicked off the evening of high hopes by breaking a pool record that was set back in 2006 by the Clearfield foursome of John Lytle and company. The record they were after was 1:44.24 and the Dutch relay of Seth Dippold, Michael Proudfit, Andrew Cotter and Alex Anderson topped that mark with a 1:43.03 finish. The Dutch quartet also broke the 200 free relay record later in the meet with a time of 1:31.21, beating out the previous record of 1:31.85 held by Bradford since 2008. Proudfit went onto break the school record in the 100 yard breaststroke with a 1:01.68 finish. The previous record was just set two weeks ago in Brookville by teammate Andrew Cotter with his time of 1:01.69. The fun did not stop there for the Dutch as they went onto win the meet by a score of 99-87 when all was tallied up. This is the first time in the 26 years of SMAHS swimming and diving that the Dutch have topped the Bisons who are a perennial league front runners. The win increased the boys’ overall record to 4-0 with the dual season one meet shy of the halfway mark. “Our guys did super and they wanted this badly. The times that they posted tonight were nothing short of amazing for this time of year. They went after it tonight and I congratulate them for a job well done,” remarked SMA head coach Mark DeMuro. Leaders of the night were Dippold, M. Proudfit and Cotter who turned in great performances in their individual events as well as being part of the two winning relays. Dippold took the 100 free and 100 backstroke, M. Proudfit won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke while Cotter was tops in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. The Lady Dutch were strong in their events but finished behind the Lady Bisons by a score of 101-85. The meet was closer than the final score indicated and it was a lack of depth that may have hampered the girls as they faced a much larger veteran Clearfield squad. The girls 200 medley relay of Brittany Orr, Melinda Stebich, Kylee Proudfit and Sami Ferragine took the first event of the evening but it was a few events later that until the Lady Dutch captured another event. Steph Buerk finished first in the 200 freestyle and later in the 500 freestyle. Brittany Orr also claimed the 100 backstroke while Kylee Proudfit won the 100 breaststroke. “Our girls really hung in there and fought until the end. The Clearfield girls have some really strong swimmers and we weren’t too far behind them so we are happy that we could be competitive and give them a run for their money,” added Coach Mark DeMuro. The Lady Dutch now stands 3-1 on the season. Both squads will be back in action this Thursday in DuBois High School at 6 p.m. The St. Marys Area results are as follows: Lady Dutch (85-101) 200 freestyle relay – first (Brittany Orr, Melinda Stebich, Kylee Proudfit, Sami Ferragine); third (Kristen DeLullo, Jocelyn Marzella, Michaela Rupprecht, Saige Leidwinger). 200 freestyle – first Stephanie Buerk, fourth DeLullo, sixth Anna Prechtl. 200 IM – second Melinda Stebich, third K.
