By JIM MULCAHY Staff Writer The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team improved to 14-1 on the season with a 66-55 victory over the Clearfield Lady Bisons at Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium at the Clearfield Area High School last night.
After a sluggish start offensively, the Lady Dutch outscored Clearfield 60-45 to win the game. Clearfield held a 10-6 lead after the first 8 minutes of play. “Clearfield is a very difficult to defend. They shoot and rebound well,” said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson. “I thought we ran the court well and rebounded well. Kayla (Hoohuli) had 15 rebounds, Amanda Simbeck 10 and Mandy Gerarge eight,” noted the coach. “Kayla had a great game with six assists, seven steals and five blocked shots. Amanda had five steals. Mandy did a nice defensive job on Elizabeth Peters and Kayla held Amber Byerly to seven,” added coach Swanson. The Lady Dutch offense was led by Kayla Hoohuli with 41 points on nine twos, five threes and an 8-for-9 night from the foul line. Amanda Simbeck was next with 10 points on three twos, one three and a 1-for-2 night from the foul line. Clearfield was led by Elizabeth Sopic with 18 points on nine field goals. Gwenn Porter scored 13 points on three twos, one three and a 4-for-7 night from the foul line. The first 8 minutes of play found Clearfield outscoring St. Marys 10-6. Sopic led Clearfield with six points while Hoohuli, Jenna Anderson and Rachel Krieg each had a field goal for St. Marys. In the second quarter, the Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Bisons by a 20-13 margin to take a 26-23 halftime lead. Hoohuli led St. Marys with 10 points while Porter lead Clearfield with six. Each team scored 21 third period points as St. Marys led 47-44 with one quarter remaining. Hoohuli had eight and Adair Gennocro six to pace St. Marys. Jayme Ryan led Clearfield with six points. In the final eight minutes of play, the Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Bisons 19-11 to win the game 66-55. Hoohuli had 19 points in the quarter to pace the Lady Dutch. Sopic led Clearfield with six. Game notes The Lady Dutch are now 14-1 on the season and 6-1 in District 9 League play. St. Marys returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Bradford to take on the Lady Owls in another District 9 League game. Clearfield took a 15-10 first period lead. The Lady Dutch came back in the second quarter to outscore Clearfield 11-4 in the second quarter to take a 21-19 halftime lead. St. Marys outscored Clearfield 14-10 in the third period. The fourth quarter found Clearfield outscoring St. Marys 15-2 to win the game 44-37.
