State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Elk/Clearfield) visited students at St. Boniface Elementary School in Kersey during Catholic Schools Week. As a catholic school alumni, having graduated from St. Catherine’s Elementary in DuBois and DuBois Central Catholic High School, Gabler spoke to the students about the benefits of a Catholic education. He pursued his studies at Bucknell University. Students from first through fifth grades attended the gathering held in the school’s cafeteria. Gabler posed several questions to students such as what they enjoy about their Catholic education and what they want to be when they grow up, in which students answers ranged from veterinarians, doctors, bakers and professional athletes.
“Catholic schools can help you get there,” Gabler said. Prior to being elected a state legislator, Gabler spent time as a substitute teacher specializing in social studies. He then explained how he got his job describing the election process and the details and workings of state government. Gabler has been in office for 14 months Students then had the opportunity to ask Gabler questions. Many of which revolved around his job and why he decided to run for election. “I get to do something different everyday and talk to all different types of people, Gabler said. Several interesting questions came about such as if he has ever met the President, which he answered no as well as the furthest place he has traveled to, being Seattle, Wash. during a training mission with his Army Reserve unit. Gabler explained that he has been in office for 14 months and received 13,131 votes in the election. He described the favorite parts of his job as visiting with children and presenting citations to notable citizens. He added the hardest part is trying to get people to agree on legislation. “There are not to many things that are easy,” he said.
