Robert Lawrence Taylor, 76, of 329 Walnut St., St. Marys, died peacefully on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys, following a lengthy illness.

He was born August 30, 1933, in Galeton, son of the late Robert Hayes Taylor and Mary Elizabeth Hewitt Taylor.

On June 13, 1964 he married Irene S. “Blondie” Straub at Queen of the World Church, shortly after his initiation into the Catholic faith.

He was educated in Galeton, and after he graduated from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Trained in the signal corps, he also attained the status of sharpshooter. He spent two years in Japan during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and then worked for a brief time with Western Union.

Then began his career in finance as a loan officer with Carson Finance Company in Wellsboro and then was transferred to be manager of Carson Finance in St. Marys. He served in that position for many years, working then for FNB and then Deposit Bank. He retired in 1996.

Throughout his life he was active in many community organizations, serving on the Boards of Directors of the St. Marys Businessmen’s Association, the Golf Authority and American Legion Post 103. He was also involved with the leadership of the annual Memorial Day Parade, serving one year as the Grand Marshal. He was also a member of the CMF and Sacred Heart Church.

Donations may be made to the Robert L. Taylor Scholarship Fund at Elk County Catholic High School, Saint Marys, PA 15857.

All his life he enjoyed sports; baseball, basketball softball, bowling and golf. He was an avid hunter for deer and small game. Spring trout fishing in Pine Creek in Potter County and ice fishing were a favorite joy to him.

He is survived by his wife and three sons, Rev. Paul Taylor, O.S.B. of St. Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe; Lawrence (Larry) and his wife Maureen and their children Emily, Ryan and Owen of Ellicott City, MD and Robert (Bert) and his wife Jennifer and their children, James, Zachary, Madeline and Nicholas of Crofton, MD. He is also survived by a sister, Janet Taylor of Prescott, AZ.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Robert Lawrence Taylor will be celebrated by his son, Father Paul, on Wednesday, March 10th at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in the St. Marys Cemetery.

Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail. Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials if desired can be made to a favorite charity.
