St. Marys Area High School Student Activities Director Terry Straub provided an overview of the school’s winter sport season at the recent St. Marys Area School District School Board workshop.
Straub’s overview included such sports as wrestling, girls and boys’ basketball, swimming/diving and gymnastics. Senior wrestler Sean Sadosky was named by the Associated Press to the large school All-State Football First Team Defense as a linebacker for the second consecutive year. He also recently signed a letter of intent to play football at Shippensburg University this fall. Sadosky continued his athletic endeavors on the wrestling mat where he finished the regular season undefeated with a record of 29-0 and became the seventh member of the Dutchmen’s 100 career win club. He captured his first District 9 wrestling title at 215 pounds by achieving pins in times of 11 seconds and 58 seconds. Joining Sadosky this past weekend at the AAA Northwest Regionals in Altoona was senior teammate Butch Yetzer, who was the runner-up at the 140-pound weight class. Following a successful regionals appearance, Sadosky will be competing in the state tournament in Hershey from today through Saturday. In addition, long-time wrestling head coach Wayne Fordoski was recognized by the District 9 Wrestling Coaches Association at the district meet. On senior night, Fordoski’s name was added to the St. Marys Area wrestling mat, between State Champions Tim Wittman and Ben Keebler. On the basketball court, junior Kayla Hoohuli continues to set the Lady Dutch all-time career scoring record every time she scores. On Jan. 5, Hoohuli set the new mark of 1,419 points. She was also recently featured on the high school sports Web site, maxpreps.com. According to Straub, Hoolhuli led the team to its third consecutive Elk County Holiday Tournament banner and third District 9 title. In the pool, the boys’ swim team is also breaking records that includes nine pool and four school records. They finished the season undefeated with a record of 10-0 and won the District 9 League and was recently crowned the District 6-9 Regional Champions, during a meet at Penn State where the team had six first-place winners and one second-place winner. Among this year’s team standouts are Seth Dippold, Michael Proudfit, Andrew Cotter, Alex Anderson and Michael Stebich. The girls team captured a third place at the district league meet and finished their season with a strong 6-4 record. Maria Holm brought home a third-place finish in girls diving at the regional meet. The final swimming competition is the state meet being held March 19-20 at Bucknell University. The gymnastics team finished their season with an even 4-4 record, but managed to secure a second-place finish at the Central Pennsylvania Gymnastics League Meet. This season the team was able to defeat their league rivals Altoona, DuBois and Ridgway. The team captured the runner-up title at this past weekend’s PA Classic Team Championships in Waynesboro. Under first year head coach Mark Guido, the boys’ basketball team captured two victories this season after graduating last year’s entire lineup. The junior varsity squad finished with a strong 15-5 record, while the seventh grade team finished with a 19-1 record with the only loss coming in overtime. Straub noted that spring sports practice began Monday. In addition, 56 students have signed up for the Trap Laegue. Practice begins on March 22 and will run for two weeks. Match play begins Thursday, April 8 and runs for six weeks.
