By JIM MULCAHY Staff Writer Four members of the St. Marys Area gymnastics team competed as all arounds at the Pa. Classic Gymnastics Championships held over the weekend in Moon Township.
This was the first time St. Marys Area High School had four all arounds qualify for this meet as well as having all four come home with medals. Qualifying in the Silver Division were Ashley McCandless, Molly Eshbach and Megan Longhi and in the Bronze Division Michaela Sorg. Molly Eshbach won the Silver Division title becoming only the second state champion in St. Marys Area gymnastics history. Molly won the Silver Division with a 9.1 on vault, just missing the school record by .15 of a point. She placed seventh on bars and eighth in the all around. Ashley McCandless placed 11th on vault while Megan Longhi placed 10th on vault and 12th on beam, all in the Silver Division. Michaela Sorg placed second on vault an fifth on floor in the Bronze Division. “It was an awesome ending to an awesome season,” said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless. The scores received by the St. Marys gymnasts are as follows: Eshbach - 9.1 on vault, 8.823 on bars, 7.55 on beam and 8.3 on floor for an all around score of 33.233. McCandless - 8.567 on vault, 7.717 on bars, 7.75 on beam and 7.6 on floor for an all around score of 31.534. Longhi - 8.583 on vault, 7.167 on bars, 7.925 on beam and 7.825 on floor for an all around score of 31.5. Sorg - 8.583 on vault, 7.483 on bars, 5.55 on beam and 8.025 on floor for an all around score of 29.642.
