Township plans road work

According to Roadmaster and Jay Township Supervisor Murray Lilley, the township is planning work on a number of roads beginning in April. The first road scheduled for repair is Mt. Zion Road and work is expected to begin April 5.

“We have an agreement with Benezette Township. We did some mowing for Benezette Township and Benezette Township is going to bring their grader and some people up to help us out,” Lilley said. “We are short two people right now on the road crew.”

Work will start at the Benezette Township line and the road will be closed from that point to the Rock Hill intersection.

Ditches along the roadway will be cleaned out and cross drains will be replaced.

Lilley noted that supervisor Francis Gustafson had also been talking to Mt. Zion road residents about driveway pipes.

“If they want driveway pipes they are urged to get the paperwork in now so that we can put those in,” Lilley said.

Starting next week stone will be placed in various locations along that stretch of Mt. Zion Road. The pipe will be stored at the township municipal building.

“As of right now there is 320 feet of pipe going on that road unless some other people decide that they want pipes at their driveway entrances,” Lilley said. “There are some pipes out there that are way too small that people put in years back. They are coming out because there are some pipes out there that are four inch and six inch. The minimum is actually 12 inch but we’re trying to get everybody to put in 15 inch smooth bore in and be done with it.”

Lilley added that the hope is that the project only take about three weeks.

“Again, that all depends on the weather,” Lilley said. “Hopefully we can get some decent weather.”

Following the completion of work on Mt. Zion Road, work will then begin on Spring Run Hill.

Other topics from the meeting included:

- Several residents complained about road conditions.

- The Supervisors reminded residents to fill out and submit their 2010 census forms.

- It was announced that there is still a vacancy on the Jay Township Water Authority.

- Dust oil and dumpster bids were opened and awarded.

- The supervisors approved the purchase of a new computer.

- The supervisors also approved two assessment permits on the condition that they are also cleared by the water and sewage authorities.

- The upcoming spring tire collection was discussed.

- The supervisors discussed Act 167 regarding stormwater management and some of the repercussions that could result if it is passed.
