As he works toward a career as a physical therapist, St. Marys resident Greg Wehler has been keeping involved in the community through substitute teaching at area schools.
Wehler is a 2005 graduate of St. Marys Area High School and 2009 graduate of Penn State University with a bachelors degree in kinesiology. He is currently attending Penn State DuBois to earn a degree as a physical therapy assistant. "I want to become a physical therapist because I like working with people," Wehler explained. "Seeing how the body heals is also interesting." While earning his bachelors degree, Wehler logged over 300 hours of observation at Elk Regional Health Center's physical therapy unit. "I am planning on finishing my degree at DuBois and then going to Saint Francis for my doctorate," Wehler said. Wehler's classes at Penn State DuBois are only held on certain days of the week and, since he already had the necessary clearances, he decided to apply to be a substitute teacher at area schools on the days when he does not have class. Throughout the past school yea,r he has been a substitute teacher at the St. Marys Area Middle and High schools, Fox Township Elementary School, Bennetts Valley Elementary School, and in the Ridgway Area School District. "It is rewarding to help the kids in the middle and elementary schools," Wehler noted. While in high school and college, Wehler participated competitively in swimming and diving events. This will also mark his third year serving as a lifeguard at the St. Marys Community Pool for the past three years. "I like working outside and with the community," Wehler said.
