Work got underway earlier this week on the new walking trail at Kaulmont Park.
According to community and economic development coordinator Tina
Gradizzi, Bucktail Excavators was the low bidder for the project and is
doing all of the work. "The started Monday and they should be done by the end of the week with the pathway," Gradizzi said. On Wednesday morning crews were working to dig out an area for new play equipment that will be installed next week. Two 20 by 20 foot circles will be dug out by the tire swing currently locked at the park and these areas will be the location of two new play features called the button trail and bing-boing. Gradizzi explained that the button trail will consist of 10 buttons ranging in size from 12 to 18 inches that will be arranged in a stepped, circular pattern. She added that the bing-boing is a play feature that two or three kids can stand on and it will bounce and move back and forth. "All the play equipment, as far as the play structure and bing-boing and button trail and picnic tables, will be delivered next Wednesday," Gradizzi said. Additionally, a T-Rex play feature, a climbable structure made to look like dinosaur bones, will be delivered on Thursday. Finishing touches, including the addition of mulch around the play features, will be done at the end of next week. "Woodbed is donating the wood chips for the project. They're donating between 100 and 150 yards of it for the whole project, which is wonderful. We need two palates of concrete mix and Suburban Builders is donating one palate and then we're going to purchase the other one. We've gotten donations from Giant Eagle recently and Elk County Community Foundation, DCED, DCNR, CDBG, Rec Board. If anybody would like to contribute to the project, because we're going to go on with the next phase and add equipment as we go on, they can certainly contact me or Sharon Brem at the city. Sharon's extension is 228 and mine is 225," Gradizzi said. The final portion of this phase of the project will be the planting of 20 trees by the Shade Tree Commission, which will take place sometime in the fall. Gradizzi added that the Kaulmont Park Committee will be getting together in the near future to begin planning for the next phase of the project.
