ECC finishes with fine 24-5 record
PUNXSUTAWNEY - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team was eliminated from the PIAA Class A girlsâ€™ tournament by the Vincentian Academy Lady Royals last night in a second-round game played at Punxsutawney Area High School by a 57-38 score.
The Lady Crusaders got off to a rough start offensively, as the Lady Royals outscored them 17-6 in the first period and 11-10 in the second quarter to take a 28-16 halftime lead. In the second half, Vincentian outscored Elk Catholic 29-22.
â€śWe got off to a slow start tonight. We tried to do some things we normally donâ€™t do,â€ť said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.
â€śTheyâ€™re (Vincentian) a very good basketball team. We had a hard time stopping their dribble penetration and they shot the ball well,â€ť said Pistner. â€śWe didnâ€™t shoot the ball very well.â€ť
â€śI thought our coaching staff did a great job with this team this year,â€ť said Pistner. â€śThe four seniors (Jena Struble, Abbi Petrosky, Lexie Meholic and Maggie Sorg) have been a part of two District 9 title games and have been to the PIAA tournament four times. They work hard and are very coachable. Theyâ€™re a great bunch of kids.â€ť
The Lady Crusader offense was led by Lexie Meholic with 13 points on five field goals and a three-for-seven night from the foul line. Taylor DaCanal scored 10 points on five field goals, while Abbi Petrosky added eight points.
Vincentian placed five girls in double figures, led by Lauren Primyon with 13 points on two twos and three threes. Ashlee Darby scored 12 points on six field goals, while Noreen Fischer and Brenna Wise each added 11 points. Abby Bartoszewicz scored 10 points.
Darby and Meholic traded field goals in the early going. Darby and Petrosky then exchanged buckets. Fischer scored for Vincentian before Meholic sank one of two foul shots, 6-5. Wise and Fischer scored to give the Lady Royals a 10-5 lead. Petrosky sank a foul shot. Fischer sank two foul shots and Darby hit a field goal, 14-6. Abbey Bartoszewicz hit a three at the buzzer to give Vincentian the 17-6 lead after one period.
Bartoszewicz scored to open the second period. DaCanal would score two field goals to cut the Vincentian lead to 19-10. Fischer and Petrosky traded buckets. Vincentian scored four more points before Michelle Imbrogno scored for Elk, 25-14 with 1:53 left in the half. Primyon hit a three for the Lady Royals, 28-14. Petrosky scored for Elk to make the halftime score 28-16 in favor of Vincentian.
Primyon and Jena Struble traded threes to open the third period. The Lady Royals went on a 7-0 run to lead 36-19. DaCanal scored for Elk before Abbey Bartoszewicz hit a three and Wise added a two, 41-21. Struble and DaCanal scored for Elk Catholic, 41-25. Vincentian outscored Elk 9-2 in the final minutes of the third period to lead 48-27 with eight minutes remaining.
Meholic scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, 48-31. Vincentian scored twice before Petrosky hit a foul shot, 52-32. Vincentian added five more points to lead 57-32 with 2:27 left. Meholic scored at the 1:52 mark. DaCanal scored on a putback and Meholic scored off a steal to make the final score 57-38 in favor of the Lady Royals.
The Lady Crusaders finished their season with a fine 24-5 record. They won the Allegheny Mountain League North Division with a 6-0 record. They defeated Kane for the AML title and finished the District 9 League with a 7-3 record.
