Members of the American Legion Post 978 in Weedville presented a check for $5,000 to members of the Bucktail Monument Committee on Thursday evening. The funds will be put toward the cost of constructing a monument, which will be located at the Mt. Zion Historical Park, to honor the members of the Elk County Rifles, Company G of the Civil War Bucktail Regiment.
Jim Burke, committee member and president of the Mt. Zion Historical Society, addressed members of Post 978 prior to the check presentation.
"Every county that had Bucktails, except Elk County, and I think I'm correct in this, has a monument observing their companies that served in the Bucktails," Burke said.
He added that the committee thought it was "fitting and proper" to honor members of the Bucktails from Elk County this year, since 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War.
Burke noted that Lt. Colonel Thomas Leiper Kane recruited many of the county residents who served in the Elk County Rifles division of the Bucktails from the Benezette area.
"He got together a company of men in less than 24 hours. They wanted people that they could drag out of the woods that could shoot, live off the woods and were hardy people, and he got them from this area," Burke said.
According to Burke, the anticipated cost of the monument is currently around $28,000.
