Wilcox Legion hands St. Marys 7-0 setback

The St. Marys Legion baseball team was handed its first loss of the season in the form of a 7-0 setback by the Wilcox Legion Wednesday night at Berwind Park.
The St. Marys squad had three hits in the game on a double by Nick Burdick, and singles by Jordan Weinzierl and Jake Cortina.
Wilcox had nine hits in the game, led by Joe Holmberg with a triple and a single. Cole Peterson had a double and two singles, Jesse Reynolds had two singles, Frank Kocjancic had a double and Josh Mitchell had a single.
Pat Brennen started on the mound for St. Marys and worked four innings, giving up seven hits, walking six, and striking out three. Nate Geist worked three innings of relief, giving up two hits and striking out three.
Wilcox started out the top of the first inning with a single by Peterson, who advanced on a stolen base and passed ball and scored on a single by Reynolds. Mitchell Holmberg walked. A double play by St. Marys saw Reynolds out at third and Mitchell out at first, and Joe Holmberg struck out to end the top half of the inning with Wilcox up 1-0. In the bottom half of the inning, Mitchell Meyer led off for St. Marys by striking out. Geist walked, Weinzierl singled and Brennen walked to load the bases. Anthony Grimone reached first on a fielder's choice that saw Geist thrown out at home and the inning ended with Nicklas striking out.
Wilcox went down in order in the top of the second inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Eric Wehler flied out to right field. Jake Cortina walked and advanced to third on a double by Burdick. St. Marys was unable to capitalize, however, as Meyer struck out and Geist flied out to second base.
The top of the third inning saw Wilcox extend its lead. Kocjancic started things off with a single and advanced on a passed ball. Peterson flied out to center field. Reynolds walked and later advanced on a passed ball. Mitchell Holmberg flied out to center for the second out of the inning. Mitchell walked. A single by Joe Holmberg scored Kocjancic and Cameron Grumley walked to score Reynolds. Zac Luhr grounded to Brennen, but an error on Cortina allowed him to reach second and also saw Mitchell, Joe Holmberg and Grumley score to put Wilcox up 6-0. Quinn Luhr walked and the top half of the inning ended with Kocjancic striking out. St. Marys went down in order in the bottom half of the inning.
Peterson started off the top of the fourth inning with a double. Reynolds singled but was thrown out at second on a single by Mitchell Holmberg. Mitchell walked to load the bases. A single by Joe Holmberg scored Peterson and also saw Mitchell thrown out at second. The top half of the inning ended as Grumley flied out to center with Wilcox up 7-0. In the bottom half of the inning, Luke Nicklas struck out and Wehler flied out to center. Cortina singled, but was left on base as Burdick struck out.
Both teams went down in order in the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, Peterson singled but was later thrown out at second. Reynolds struck out. Mitchell Holmberg reached first on an error on the first baseman, but was left stranded as Mitchell struck out. St. Marys went down in order in the bottom half of the inning.
Joe Holmberg started off the top of the seventh inning with a triple, but was unable to score as the next three batters went down in order. St. Marys went down in order in the bottom half of the inning to give Wilcox the 7-0 victory.
St. Marys will be back in action tonight when they travel to Fox Township for a 6 p.m. game. St. Marys will also take part in a doubleheader at Smethport on Sunday, with the first game scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
