William K. Distler

William K. Distler, 82, of Endwell and a former resident of Newark Valley, N.Y. and St. Marys, died peacefully on Jan. 1, 2014.
He was a graduate of St. Marys High School. He was a wounded veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army for 39 months. He was a graduate of Lock Haven Teachers College and received his master's in education from the University of Buffalo.
Bill was dedicated to education, serving as principal of the Newark Valley High School for 21 years and was active in teachers associations. He also served two terms as Tioga County (N.Y.) legislator, two terms as Tioga County (N.Y.) treasurer, was a Boy Scout Leader, former member of the VFW, American Legion, and Loyal Order of Moose.
Bill will be remembered for his great sense of humor.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carmella N. Distler; his children, Robert (Wendy) Distler, Mark (Darlene) Distler, John (Kathy) Distler, Caryn (Kurt) Johnson, Barbara (David) Distler; grandchildren Greg, Jenna, Mark, Lauren, Kaitlyn, Kyle and Kaileigh; brothers James and Ronald Distler; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Wallace and Florence Distler; and siblings Wallace Distler Jr. and Bonnie Caggeso.
In Bill’s honor and memory, his family will be establishing a Newark Valley High School Scholarship Fund. For those who wish, contributions may be directed to Caryn Distler Johnson, 990 Casterline Rd., Endicott, N.Y. 13760.
His family received friends at the MacPherson Funeral Home in Newark Valley on Saturday, Jan. 4, from 12 p.m. until 1:45 pm. A memorial service was held there at 2 p.m. with Rev. William A.
