William R. Penfield Sr.

William R. Penfield Sr., 87, formerly of Ridgway and Kane, died Monday morning, March 14, 2011, at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Brockway, son of the late William J. and Dorothy (Woods) Penfield.
He married Erma Jean Griffith on Jan. 19, 1946. She preceded him in death on May 17, 1974.
He had resided in Ridgway for most of his life and was Protestant by faith. He had attended Ridgway schools and was a member of the American Legion Post #208 in Ridgway and a member of the V.F.W. in Kane. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of WWII. He had been employed by the Elliott Company and by Stackpole Carbon Co. for 25 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan E. Heindel and her husband Donald of St. Marys; two sons, William R. Penfield Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Ridgway, and John C. Penfield and his wife Jane of Ridgway; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Milton Penfield and his wife Velma of Rasselas and Thomas Penfield and his wife Melinda of Woodward, Calif.; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jeanie Bonfilio of Kane.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Penfield.
Funeral and Committal Services for William R. Penfield Sr. will be held at the Thompson Funeral Home, Ridgway, on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David C. Roddy, Pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Oakmont Cemetery.
Military honors will be accorded by the Ridgway Servicemen's Burial Detail.
Friends will be received at the Thompson Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
