Clearfield rallies to edge Lady Dutch 50-47

The Clearfield Lady Bisons rallied in the fourth quarter to hand the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch a 50-47 District 9 League setback last night at the SMAHS gym.

The Lady Dutch controlled the game for 24 minutes as they led by seven
at the end of the first quarter, 13 at the half and 11 at the end of
three quarters. The final stanza found Clearfield outscoring St. Marys
20-6 to win the game.

The Lady Bisons were nine of 13 from the foul line in the fourth period. For the game they were 14 of 22.

Turnovers and fouls were the difference in the game according to Lady Dutch coach Bob Swanson.

The Lady Dutch had 34 miscues in the contest while Clearfield had 25.

Missy Aul and Lauren Pelgrin led the Lady Dutch offense with 11 points
each. Aul scored her points on five field goals and a one for two night
from the foul line. Pelgrin scored her points on one two and three
threes.

Aul finished as the leading rebounder for the Lady Dutch with five and played an all around good game for St. Marys.

Elizabeth Sopic led Clearfield with 14 points on five field goals and a
four for six night from the foul line. Brooke Jordan scored 13 points
on four field goals and a five for seven night from the line.

Tammy Yanak gave the Lady Dutch the early lead, 2-0. Clearfield came
back on buckets by Jordan and Sopic to take the 4-2 lead. Lauren
Pelgrin scored on a two and a three making it 7-4. Sopic converted one
of two foul shots before Aul scored off a steal, Kara Carnovale hit a
three and Aul scored another bucket to give the Lady Dutch the 14-5
lead. Nikki Collins converted a three-point play to cut it to 14-8 and
Sopic added a field goal, 14-10. Aul hit a field goal and later added a
foul shot to give St. Marys the 17-10 lead after one period of play.

Carnovale opened the second quarter with a three and Tia Cunningham
added a two for St. Marys. Sopic hit a field goal and Jordan added a
foul shot, 22-13. Gina Pelgrin and Alanna Luzier traded buckets. Then
it was Luzier and Gina Pelgrin again. Luzier and Mallory Janocko hit
buckets to make it 26-21 with 2:08 left in the half. Lauren Pelgrin hit
two threes and Aul added a two to give St. Marys the 34-21 halftime
advantage.

Clearfield outscored St. Marys 9-7 in the third period to cut the Lady Dutch lead to 41-30 after three quarters.

Cunningham gave St. Marys a 43-30 lead to open the final quarter.
Clearfield went on a 7-0 run to make it 43-37. Aul gave the Lady Dutch
a 45-37 lead with 4:49 left in the game. The Lady Bisons sank four foul
shots and hit a field goal to make it 45-43 with 1:08 left. Yanak
converted two foul shots, 47-43. Jordan sank two foul shots to cut the
St. Marys lead to 47-45 with 43 seconds left. A foul shot by Sopic cut
it to 47-46. Sopic scored off a steal to make it 48-47. With nine
seconds remaining, Jordan converted two foul shots to give Clearfield
the 50-47 victory.



Game notes

? The Lady Dutch are now 3-3 on the year. They are 0-1 in District 9 League play.

? St. Marys returns to action Friday when they travel to DuBois Area to
take on the Lady Beavers in a District 9 League game. The junior
varsity starts at 6 p.m. with the varsity contest to follow at 7:30 p.m.



JV's win

The St. Marys junior varsity defeated Clearfield by a 38-35 score.

St. Marys took the 10-7 first period lead. Clearfield outscored the
Lady Dutch 9-8 in the second period to trail 18-16 at the half.

The Lady Dutch outscored Clearfield 15-4 in the third period. In the
fourth quarter, Clearfield outscored St. Marys 15-5 but it wasn't
enough as the Lady Dutch won 38-35.

St. Marys scoring: Leanne Levenduski 8, Gina Pelgrin 6, Megan Herbstritt 13, Samantha Kneidel 2, Tia Cunningham 9.

Clearfield scoring: Gwenn Porter 2, Elizabeth Peters 3, Amber Byerly 5,
Jayme Ryan 10, Madison Sopic 9, Julie Colesar 3, Kristen McKenzie 3.
