Elk County Catholic's Lady Crusaders basketball squad weathered some cold first quarter shooting, then warmed up to breeze to a 56-17 victory District Nine League victory over the Lady Bisons of Clearfield at the Aaron J. Straub Gym on the ECCHS campus last evening.
Andie Beverage of the Lady Crusaders pulls down rebound during third quarter action in last night's game against the Clearfield Lady Bisons. Other Lady Crusader in the photo Dominique DeFrain, 11. "This is the first game this season where we played four good quarters
of basketball," ECCHS Coach Ken Pistner said following the game. "Even
though we were very cold in the shooting department in the first period
the girls never quit as they warmed up quickly after that to put the
game away early."
"This was a quality win for us as every member of the squad saw action
tonight with 10 of the girls hitting the scoring column. We displayed
some quickness tonight as we had 20 steals and caused numerous other
turnovers. Our pressure defense also caused the Clearfield squad to
force some shots," said Pistner.
The Elk Catholic scoring was very well divided last night as they
played a very unselfish game. Andie Beveridge and Laken Lenox were the
leading scorers with 10 each, followed by Kaitlyn Geci, Laura Straub,
and Kirstie Pistner with six each and Elena Reed with five.
Nikki Collins led the Lady Bisons with six points, followed by Alanna Luzier with five.
Defensively the Lady Crusaders were led by Laura Straub with five
blocks. Emily Radkowski was the leading rebounder for the ECCH squad
with eight, while Dominique DeFrain led the team in assists with six.
The Lady Crusaders went up 4-0 to start the game on buckets by Emily
Radkowski and Beveridge, but the Lady Bisons came back with six
straight points to take the lead for the first and last time at 6-4.
Elk then scored four straight (Radkowski and Lenox) to make it 8-6, but
the Lady Bisons knotted the score at 8-8 prior to the end of the period.
Elk Catholic came out in the second quarter playing very aggressive
defense which caused the Lady Bisons plenty of trouble. Elk turned
numerous Clearfield turnovers early in the period into easy buckets as
they scored the first 14 points in the quarter to take a 22-8 lead.
Following a Clearfield bucket at the four minute mark, Elk tacked on
four points, 26-10, before the Lady Bisons hit a foul goal to make it
26-11. The Lady Crusaders scored the final eight points of the quarter
to take a commanding 34-11 halftime lead.
The third quarter was another low scoring affair as the Lady Crusaders
were held to just 11 points, while the Lady Bisons were held to just
four points. The final stanza was also dominated by the ECCHS defense
as they allowed the Lady Bisons just two points in the entire quarter
when they tacked on 11 more to win the game by a 56-17 score.
Game notes
The Lady Crusaders are now 2-1 in the District Nine League and 4-0 in
