John L. “Jack” Schneider, 84, of 514 Armory Rd., St. Marys, died on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at the Elk Regional Health Center after an illness of the past several months.
He was born Dec. 25, 1929 in St. Marys, son of the late Leo and Anna Mertz Schneider. On Sept. 18, 1965 in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Joanne L. Loeffler, who survives.
Mr. Schneider was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1948. He was a retired employee of the Keystone Carbon Company, retiring in 1995 with over 40 years of service. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War. After retiring, he enjoyed bowling, going to hunting camp, gardening, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Susan Schaut and her husband Jeffrey of St. Marys, and Julie Heary and her husband Thomas of St. Marys; a son, John R. Schneider of St. Marys; four grandchildren, Jared Schaut, Marlee Schaut, Marissa Heary and Ryan Heary; two sisters, Orma McKeon of St. Marys and Elizabeth “Betty” Struble of Erie; and three brothers, Richard Schneider of St. Marys, Theodore Schneider of Kersey, and Timothy Schneider and his wife Wanda of St. Marys. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including his nephew Bob Roberts of St. Marys.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Sadley Carpenter, Marion Roberts, and Dolores Arnold; and two brothers, William and Thomas Schneider.
A Mass of Christian Burial for John L. “Jack” Schneider will be celebrated in the St. Mary’s Church on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at noon, with the Rev. Thomas More Sikora, OSB, Pastor, officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Friday evening, Jan. 3, 2014, from 5-8 p.m.
