James C. Copella Sr., 87, of 325 Dewey Circle, Ridgway, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014 at Pinecrest Manor.
He was born Oct. 5, 1926 in Kersey, son of the late Edward C. and Bessie May Moyer Copella. He married his lifelong friend, Carol D. Keller, she survives.
Jim was a member of the Kersey United Methodist Church and lay speaker of the Brockport Charge until 1968. After that he was a member and lay speaker of the Ridgway Church of Christ. He was a talented musician playing guitar, saxophone and trumpet, and sharing his talent transposing music to be played by his children and young members of the churches.
Jim worked at the Elliott Company and retired from Airco Speer Carbon. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WWII, and landed on Okinawa the day peace was declared. Jim was a loving husband, father, and grandfather – a strong and steady rock for his family and will be sadly missed.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Jim Jr. and Delcine of Cincinnati, Ohio, Tom and Linda of Ridgway, Pam and Craig Wriglesworth of Orlando, Fla., and Cindy and Dave Parsons of Ridgway; seven grandchildren, Beverly Emmert (Troy), Jimmy Copella, Sean Copella, Joshua Copella, Scarlett Cabanaw, Craig Wriglesworth II, and Jason Wriglesworth; five step-grandchildren, Shane, Joshua, Seth, Jen and Nick; five great-grandchildren, Ryan Caggiano, Jared and Brandon Emmert, Isaac Copella and Morgan Cabanaw; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Bill, Don, Alan, David, Bob, and Ted Copella; a sister, Dolores (Doy) Stubbs; and by a son-in-law, Jim Reilly.
Funeral services for James C. Copella Sr. will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Meehan-Shilk Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Roger A. Peterson, pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 31 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Military honors will be accorded by the Ridgway Military Servicemen's Detail.
