Rocco “Dutch” Rio, 88, died Friday, Nov. 12 at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.
He was born on Sept. 11, 1922 in Tyler, son of the late Jiacamo Rio and Anna Krolick.
He married Julianna “Jay” Kematick on Aug. 16, 1947 and she survives.
Rio is a decorated U.S. Marine who served during WWII with the Sixth Division in the Marshall Islands, Guam, and the Mariana Islands. He retired from Rockwell, DuBois after 40 years. He was a long-time member and an altar server at St. Joseph’s Church. He was a member of the Marine League, VFW 813, American Legion, Penfield Fireman’s Club, Independent Political and Social Club, Bennetts Valley Rod & Gun Club, and the Olympic Athletic Club. Dutch also managed the Little League Baseball Team in Bennetts Valley to a championship. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and loved gardening.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Gary (Bonnie) of Weedville; two daughters, Lori (Tom Gasbarre) of Treasure Lake and Bonnie (Tom Ferraro) of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He is also survived by two brothers, Jake and Bill of Penfield and a sister, Anna Greco Serafine of Kersey.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Frank, Cosimo and two sisters Mary and Barbara.
A Funeral Mass for Rocco "Dutch" Rio will be celebrated on Monday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Force. Military Honors will be accorded by the Bennetts Valley Legion Post 978 Burial Detail.
Friends will be received at Ralph Geer Funeral Home, Penfield, Sunday, Nov. 14, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Monday, Nov. 15, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Christ the King Manor will be appreciated.
