The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 54-49 victory over the Port Allegany Gators Wednesday at Port Allegany.
St. Marys was able to take a 36-31 lead at the half. They made that five-point lead hold up as both teams scored 18 second-half points.
“We were never able to build a big cushion,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
“Our free-throw shooting let us down but our rebounding tonight was our saving grace. It gave us a lot of second-chance opportunities that we really needed,” he added.
The Dutch were led by Dylan Reigel with 24 points on five twos, two threes and an eight-for-16 night from the foul line. Ryan Mancuso finished with 14 points on four twos, one three and a three-for-six night from the foul line.
Port Allegany had three players in double figures, led by Matt Bodamer with 15 points on three twos, two threes and a three-for- four night from the foul line. Chad Barnard had 14 points on four twos and two threes. Camrin Stuckey finished with 10 points on two threes and two twos.
In the first period of play both teams put 20 points on the board. The second quarter found the Dutch outscoring the Gators 16-11 to take a 36-31 halftime lead.
The third period found St. Marys outscoring their hosts by a 9-5 margin to take a 45-36 lead with eight minutes remaining.
In the fourth quarter the Gators were able to outscore the Dutch by a 13-9 margin, making the final score 54-49 in favor of St. Marys.
The Dutch are now 3-0 on the season and return to action Friday when they travel to Clarion to take on the Bobcats in a non-league contest.
The St. Marys junior varsity squad won the preliminary contest.
