The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team held off the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals by a 43-39 score last night in an Allegheny Mountain League game played at the DCCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders took a 20-15 lead at the half, then held on as the Lady Cardinals outscored ECC by a 24-23 margin in the last 16 minutes of play.
“This was a nice win on the road,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.
“Our transition game improved tonight and we played good defense, holding Hopkins to nine points,” noted Pistner.
Emily Gregory led the Lady Crusader offense with 10 points on four field goals and a two-for-two night from the foul line. Abbi Petrosky, Lexie Meholic and Ellie Petrosky each added eight points for ECC.
Miller Hopkins led DCC with nine points on three field goals and a three-for-six night from the foul line. Alyssa Marchiori, Tricia Varacallo and Megan Witherow all finished with eight points.
The first period of play found Elk Catholic outscoring DuBois Central by an 11-9 margin. In the second quarter, the Lady Crusaders outscored their hosts by a 9-6 margin to take a 20-15 lead at the half.
DuBois Central came back in the third period to outscore Elk by a 13-11 margin, cutting ECC’s lead to 31-28 with eight minutes remaining.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Crusaders outscored their hosts 12-11 to win the game 43-39.
The Lady Crusaders are now 3-1 on the year. They are also 3-1 in Allegheny Mountain League play.
The Lady Crusaders return to action Wednesday when they play host to the DuBois Area Lady Beavers in their District 9 League opener.
