The Lady Dutch of St. Marys Area High School ran their slate to 5-0 on Monday evening as they handed the Port Allegany Lady Gators a 60-33 setback in a game played at the "Dutch Oven".
The Lady Gators led only once in the ball game, and that was at the start, 2-0. St. Marys used a pressure defense to control the ball game, as they forced the Lady Gators into turnover after turnover, especially during the first half.
"We started out a little slow tonight, but picked things up after the first four minutes," said Bob Swanson, head coach of the Lady Dutch. "We wanted to work on our defense tonight. We tried three difference presses that worked okay, but not as well as I had hoped for.
"I was able to use a lot of the younger kids tonight and that is why I used Kayla (Hoohuli) later in the game. I wanted to give the young kids a chance to play with a seasoned veteran. Kayla ran the offense with the younger players in the fourth quarter and she was able to give them opportunities to score. She turned down plenty of opportunities to score herself to run the offense for the reserves.
"We changed our offense just before the season started and this type of game helped our bench people become more familiar with the offense. I was pleased with the way both the starters and reserves played tonight, as Port Alllegany had a good ball club and will get nothing but better as the season progresses."
Kayla Hoohuli led the Lady Dutch in scoring on Monday evening with 33 points on 13 field goals, two treys and a one-for-three night at the line. She was followed by Abbey Cribbs, who scored six points off the bench, Jenna Anderson with five, DeAnna Yost with four points, Mandy Gerarge with three points and Shelby Zomcik, Adair Gennocro, Kiana Hoohuli and Becky Krieg with two points each. Rachel Walker rounded out the Lady Dutch, scoring with one point.
Rachel Taylor led the Lady Gators with 10 points, followed by Kyley Mickle with seven, Renee Edgell and Jordan Edgell with five each, Cora Bova with four and Tryanna Evens with two.
Port Allegany grabbed their only lead of the game early in the opening period, when R. Edgell hit two foul goals to give the Lady Gators a 2-0 lead. Kayla Hoohuli put the Lady Dutch up 3-2 with a trey, then added a field goal and another trey to make it 8-2. Another foul goal by Edgell made it 8-3. Anderson scored for the Lady Dutch, followed by buckets by Mickle and Bova of Port to make it 10-7. Hoohuli hit two field goals prior to the end of the period to give the Lady Dutch a 14-7 lead.
Hoohuli hit two field goals, Gerarge two foul goals and Anderson a trey to start the second period as the Lady Dutch went up 22-7. Port missed two foul goals, then Kiana Hoohuli connected on two foul goals to make it 24-7. A field goal by Evens and a foul goal by J. Edgell was answered by a Walker foul goal and a Hoohuli field goal to make it 27-10. R. Edgell hit a field goal, but once again Kayla Hoohuli hit two field goals just before the buzzer to give St. Marys a 31-12 halftime lead.
Mickle scored for Port to open the third quarter, but five straight field goals by the Lady Dutch (three by Hoohuli and one each by Gerarge and Gennocro) gave St. Marys a 41-14 lead. Coach Swanson then pulled his starters, as Port was able to score eight straight points, making it 41-22. In the closing minute of the third quarter, Cribbs hit two field goals to offset two by the Lady Gators to make the score 45-26.
The final period found the Lady Dutch outscoring the Port Allegany girls by a 15 to 7 margin to win the game by a 60-33 score. Cribbs, Hoohuli, Yost, Zomcik, and Krieg accounted for the Lady Dutch points in this period.
