Willis Wilbur Smith, 83, of Gardner Hill Road, Weedville, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010 at Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born Nov. 22, 1927 on Gardner Hill in Weedville, the son of the late Willard R. and Esther I. Smith. On March 2, 1957, he married Alta Byerly, who survives.
Mr. Smith was a lifelong resident of Bennetts Valley. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Hartford Bros. of Emporium on pipelines until 1973, and Marlow Mining of Dillsburg and local strip mines for Jack Buehler of Ridgway until his retirement in 1998. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea, serving as a heavy equipment operator.
He was Protestant by faith. He was a member of Bennetts Valley Lions Club and Senior Center, and enjoyed hunting and antique cars.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Willard C. Smith of Yakima, Wash., and Stanley and wife Carol Smith of Weedville; two sisters, June Sepiol of Emporium and Esther Garvin of Weedville; and two grandchildren, Sharon M. and Willis R. Smith.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Willard and Alvin; and two sisters, Lillian Weidow and Virginia Sarakin.
Funeral services for Willis Wilbur Smith will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 27 at the at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home, Penfield, with Pastor Timothy Rogers officiating. Burial will take place in Gardner Hill Cemetery in Weedville. Military honors will be accorded by the Bennetts Valley Legion Post 978 Burial Detail.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, Dec. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday, Dec. 10 to 11 a.m. at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home in Penfield.
The family suggests memorials to the Bennetts Valley Lions or Senior Center.
